That was the very last drive in I saw a movie at. It was june of 2000 and I was in my 47 Chevy convertible. Sad day
When talking to some friends about this tonight, the consensus seemed to be that this could end up being a good thing. You see, this structure has looked really rough for a long time and was is dire need of restoration. Also, visitors traveling from the airport to downtown can clearly see it from the expressway. A very cool art deco design, but in really bad condition. Aside from historic value, an active drive in is probably as good as we can expect from this property from an economic standpoint. So, we are thinking if it can be restored it may not be looked back on as such a disaster. There used to be a lot of drive ins in the Tulsa area. If you look up a satellite image of the Admiral Twin, and look due north toward the airport only about 1 mile to Pine Street, you can clearly see the ghost of another drive in, the Airview. The Airview closed over 30 years ago, IIRC. Due to depressed real estate in that area, the property still remains unused. I sure hope the Admiral Twin doesn't end up another ghost for decades to come.
