Frank (Florian) Izbinski and his wife Christina were members of the Santa Anita A's. He drove his Sedan all around Temple City. While I was machining out in the shop I heard several whirly birds flying over head. I thought the bank or something got robbed as that is mostly the only time you'd see 4 news coppers over head.
Thought nothing more of it. Then the cell started ringing off the hook. since this was only several blocks south of where I live, I decided to go check it out. Well you don't normally think that a stocker A sedan would be a dangerous thing and most of us don't.
I saw Frank's car, but from where the sheriff/coroner had cordoned off the area it was hard to get a good look at the car.
Sure enough it was someone that we see at Annia's for Sunday breakfast or just cruising around town.
It was a sad day in TC as stated in the ***le. Very surreal as one stood across the street from the accident scene and looked at the whole picture. In the background is a very traditional California Bungalow with the prerequisite white picket fence. The Large Oak tree charred by the wreckage with the car up against it so reminded me of "Its a Wonderful Life" when George Bailey hits the tree with his Pheaton, just a dent in the fender in the tub though.
I have kinda weird thoughts about this whole thing. My cousin Frankie who I sold my 1st driving 30 A Hot Rod to which also ran a stock tank had made a call to me just to hear my voice and make sure that it wasn't me as I'm always around in my 32, Thank God the tanks in the rear and it's a roadster so I could jump out if I could. As I pulled into the driveway, I looked at my 32 and wondered just stuff???
I thought more about it today and thought I check here and see if there was anything posted regarding this very unfortunate accident, and saw this. I have 3 model A's with cowl tanks. I remember P-Wood making a comment about driving with a bomb in your lap. All of the A's to be built are P/U's 2 Crackerboxes(Phone Booths) and a roadster p/u. I may rethink the tank location in them all.
I hope that Frank and Christina are in a better place. Drive safely HAMBers and most of all be careful in even just coming back from a drive after dinner.

    CK.

When driving a stocker it is always dangerous with the tank set up as it is. Motor moves up and breaks the gl*** bowl on the fuel line. Gas flows down on to hot exhaust and ****. Instant BBQ

Very sad to see that. Nice folks out having a pleasant evening cruise and have it end that way.

    JJ,
You're welcome. It truly is a tragedy all the way around.
I can think of a few vintage car accidents in the past few years involving injury/loss of life.

At the restaurant where we go for coffee the owner had the picture/paper of the accident and told us that she was sad about the loss and asked us to be safe driving these cars.

Horrible, just horrible. :( I am wondering if he had some medical problem and lost control, at his age that is very common, we see it happen down here all the time.

Prayers for all involved... a sad day indeed.

  22. The other way to look at it is that they went together. Yes sad but they are not leaving spouse behind.

My hope for them is that they went quickly and that the place that they are at today is pleasant and that they are together. My hope for the family is that they find peace and comfort in their time of sorrow.

Sad indeed...there have been a few of these 'A' infernos, but they've had 85 years of precarious years of highway and city street use with that lap tank design...
I hope they were knocked unconscious before that fire engulfed them.
As Benno pointed out, better place today...and they went together.
