Driving into Boston from the North this A.M. saw a flatbed out of Brooks, ME. Quick look noticed a 63 Rambler and a 55 Buick on the back heading for the recycler. Probably scrap, but maybe a few good parts. Obviously the price of scrap is causing the old yards to cull the herd.
The genesis of this is that people are forced to haul it off, because of the fuckin' 'clean up our neighborhoods' assholes, and the increasing number of housing developments that require old un-registered cars to be kept out of sight. Then, of couse, thumb-suckin' homeowners that sign on to homeowners associations restrictions because they, themselves are busybodies with inferiority complexes, rationalizing that if their yard is squeaky-clean it somehow gives them an ego trip because that makes them feel "better" than their neighbor. Then of course, as you say, after the car is dragged out of the neighbood the inevitable result is........................
Well, that and the scrapper is always willing to buy and doesn't care what's wrong with it, so when no "collector" steps up, scrapper gets a call.
Here's how it works in New England. We sophisticated Massholes are always on the cutting edge who can't wait to scrap our history. All the good yards have been emptied years ago. Our failsafe is the grandma's and grandpa's attic of ME, VT and NH where they never throw anything out. If they're cleaning out the yards up north because the cost of scrap is high, you can forget about finding anything in New England on a junkyard scour.
With the way the economy has been we in the recycling business have been straped for cash like most Americans. I hate when we crush classic's. But truth be told "they're only classics once they become rare". I don't meen that as a joke. It's just the truth. How many cars have you seen go to the "Yard" in your time that you wish you could have saved?
Dropping off a couple of late models the other day I spotted a '47 Chrysler that had been brought in.Gave it a once over but once it gets inside the gates it goes to the shredder.
i just sent 89 vehicles to their death and i honestly it wasn't easy! 29nash take a bow dude, all my neighbors can kiss my ass and fuck off! just made enough to fence to property and that is the redeeming payoff! the property i cleared wasn't my home but my personal storage since 1982. these fucking vehicles get so out of hand and i'm really glad i bailed out when i did.
