Me and my dad were working on my car today and i just thought Id give everyone a little reminder to wear your safety stuff. We were just goofin around here, but we always try to remind each other to were goggles, gloves and all the other stuff when necessary.

  2. Good idea to get in the habit at a young age. I happen to have a pair of the same ear muffs I use religiously.

Always a good idea without a doubt!
Every once in a while we get in a hurry and pass on safety stuff because we *know* nothings gonna happen..right?
Yeah, well i pulled this last week.

I was cutting the pipes for the exhaust on my truck using a hack saw.
normally i wear gloves because sometimes the last cut before it's though can catch you by surprise.
You know, you think you have a few more passes before it's through, but you were wrong.

Well, i was wrong and didn't have a few more passes left.
I made the last cut, and followed through only to punch the pipe with full force tearing the shit out of my right index finger right on the damn knuckle, and cut my left middle finger right next to the nail! [IMG]

If i had the damn gloves on, i don't think it would have been so bad.

Sorry about the 'short story'.. [IMG]
It's just every once in a while, were brought back to a slower speed. I'm just glad i didn't lose my finger.

    Tony.

If we had known we were going to live this long,
we would have taken better care of ourselves. [IMG]

The other part of the story is to know when you are safer WITHOUT gloves,
    like around rotating machinery.
At least 1/4 of the occupation horror stories I hear involve wearing gloves. [IMG]

Here's a glove story for you...timber (sawmills, etc) is one of the main industries here, due to the thousands of acres of pine plantations. Most sawmills employ a lot of mexican workers, many who cannot speak english. My cousin worked at a local mill, one day one of the mexican guys who worked one of the conveyors came running in in obvious pain, holding his hand that was missing two fingers. Unable to speak english, he couldn't tell them what happened, and their main concern was getting medical attention. About two weeks later, my cousin was working the same area, saw a glove laying under the conveyor, picked it up and threw it in the control cab. Shorlty thereafter, the conveyor jammed, he picked up the glove and started to put it on. You guessed it, the two fingers were in the glove....

Yeah, Safety First! I took this picture at the Pate swapmeet yesterday. They needed to fasten the top of the tent but had nothing to stand on.

How did he get up there to begin with? Prolly not that unsafe, the dorky looking guy on the right looks like he would be fairly soft to land on. [IMG]

BTW: I have set of hearing aids I wear every day now, because I didn't know that shooting, loud engines, and industrial noises ruin your hearing. If you hear something loud enough that your ears ring afterwards, you have just damaged your hearing...permanently!

Being deaf does have its advantages though. Before I got my hearing aids, I drove a beat up '84 S10 Blazer. The speedometer cable was dry and everyone who road with me complained about the awful noise. I couldn't hear a thing, so I just let them complain. Then I got my hearing aids. The next day I fixed the speedometer cable.

That was the good part. The first thing I noticed after I got hearing aids was birds singing (loudly). I had been missing that beautiful sound for years, without even realizing it was gone. Conversations in a noisy area are still next to impossible. So the next time you go shooting, grinding, pounding, or just rev up the old hot rod, protect your hearing first. Or it will just silently slip away (pun intended)!
