I worked with a guy who was an accident looking for a place to happen. I think I've posted about him dropping a self igniting propane torch then it wouldn't light when he pulled the button so he repeatedly clicked it while looking in the torch for the spark until it lit in his face. Another guy was checking the water in a battery in a truck that was under a flat bed that blocked the light. He decided to use his lighter with his head between the bed and the top of the battery when the battery exploded.
It's risky having stands that aren't rated for the heaviest thing in the shop. Ratings on stands can confuse some people. Stands are usually rated by the capacity of the pair and some assume it is the capacity of one stand. Some don't pay any attention to the ratings and will use them for anything.
Huh, never heard of rating per pair of jackstands. Ive always used the rating on the individual stand as per unit. Will have to check that. I was using four 3 ton stands on my 5th wheel last couple of days while doing bearing/brake maint.....trailer is tandem axle with approx weight of 11k lbs. So four stands had a supposed cap of 24k lbs.....one under each end of each axle. I was leary of entire rv sitting on stands like that with all wheels off (30 ft long) but no issues. Jack stands are cheap insurance. I just bought another pair from the discount tool store for $19.32. You're a fool if you don't use them!
