Hot Rods Safety latch for a 3 window ??

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 383deuce, Dec 26, 2014.

  1. I have been looking for a good safety latch system for a 32 3 window...Can anyone tell me what works best. I bought one set up from Brookville that they use and I think it sucks. So I am looking for something better.
    ANY IDEAS?

  3. I'm glad Larry posted these photos, they are the exact ones I was thinking about and remember them from his build.

The only problem is where the heck would you find them? HRP

HOTRODPRIMER, are those hardware store latches? Where did he get them? I could use some like that.

  7. He is in the cabinet business and I think he got them from a hardware supply that caters to cabinet builders. HRP

I need something like that too. They do lock in the open position I assume?

They appear not to lock in the open position, but they would if one mounted a "pin" in the right spot for the handle to catch on. Thanks HRP! I need something like this for my A.

We have none on our 3W but do have aircraft lap belts , OK it won't stop a door flying open ,but it will stop you flying out after reaching for the swinging door.
If you desire a safety latch I am sure there must be a discreet type that catches when the door closes but need to be manually released to open the door.
The bolt with spring type just won't work in the real world, slam the door from the out side bugger the pin is still out .

Latch on post 5. Should be on a fence post.....Used mainly on farm gates ........ Not really suitable for internal car door latch.

the latch HRP posted are like the ones used on my storage shed. they have a pin that when you pull out and twist they stay open.if it was rat rod they would ruin the door and put it on the outside. just sayin tom

My 3 window gasser had simple hardware store latches with the latch mounted ahead of the door in the kick panel area and the "loop" the attached with two screws/rivots attachec to the inside leading edge of the door. Simple but they worked pretty easily... UNLESS you forgot and tried to open the door first! That put tension on the slide and you had to pull the door in to ease the pressure so the slide would work.

I bought some door safety locks from Carolina Custom Machine (I think that's the name) many years ago to use on my 39 chevy coupe that had had the doors reversed. They have worked very well for many years and are activated by a know on the kick panel and that pushes a shaft from the kick panel into a receiver on the leading edge of the door.

Don't know how I got two but I guess that's better than none!

IMO as it sits it has an "industrial" look thats simple and effective, and besides...it would be easy to make a simple metal cover box to hide the springy bits if you wanted, with the result being a fairly attractive safety latch.
To expand on that farther...a larger version could be modified to use a handle something like the one 3WLarry posted.
You could even make a simple extender to allow mounting that handle in an easier to reach position.
    The sky is the limit.
All you really need is an imagination and a trigger to set that imagination loose! ;)

  22. that could be mounted inside the door also, with a slot for the handle. tap the end to put a knob on it and an escutchen . it would look "factory".

Of course it can lock open. Look past the top left screw hole and where the spring retaining pin is. If they came left and right sided it would be just fine. Hiding it in a box behind the door panel is next (not a hateful proposition) and then get creative with some form of dress for the handle. I could see adapting a window crank handle to the end so it matched the others. But hey, what do I know...

Hi. If you look just at the left end of the spring there is a pin. If that pin protruded far enough would it catch on the raised hump just above the spring & to the right of the top left mounting hole if the green handle was rotated up? If it does not that would be easy to alter & fix perhaps with a longer pin. Jimmie

I have had my 3W since 66. The doors have never flow open. The question is, do you really want to be locked in the car and someone can not open the door from the outside?

  26. What you need is a good fitting and working original type door latch and striker plate. My '34 Phaeton has been in the family for 51 years and the door hasn't opened while underway. My '32 3 window only has 6000 miles on it and hasn't opened either. They both have good working and adjusted latches.

Got these from a friend, I think they are Carolina custom and I made the handles.

I used Carolina Custom also but installed them in the cowl pushing back into the door. Seem to work fine when I remember them. I seldom use them. I built a chopped 33 coupe many years ago and used an electrical setup installed in the kick panel. One 100 + degree day the heat tripped the breaker on the solenoid and until I parked in the shade and it cooled I was trapped as I had made no provision for manual release. Changed that!

I'd say no, but would you want a kid to accidentally lean on the door handle and have it open? It could happen, although I agree that doors seldom just open on their own. If they do you have bigger worries than a safety latch.

  30. On our way to a show back in the mid 70's my pal Gary's passenger door on the 33 Ford flew open when he hit some rough railroad tracks, his wife reached for the door and he grabbed her arm and saved he from being pulled out of the car.

When we all pulled over the door was sprung and at the speeds we were traveling it had buckled the frame structure and the door was against the rear fender.

Granted, this rarely happens but one time is one time too many....if the major automobile manufactures had never heard of the potential of such a accident why did they stop building Fords with suicide doors.

In Gary's case he repaired the door and made a safety latch,,I can assure you it wasn't the best looking piece but it worked. HRP
