Hi I just got my model A running and driving. The trans is making noise. It sound like there is gravel inside while idling in nuetral, And it is a little hard to shift. What do I look for or try before I pull it out? Help I what to drive!!!!!
Had a friend who ordered a 66 Nova with solid lifter Corvette 327. The Saginaw trans would not allow a shift till speed dropped off, damn near had to double clutch. Sweet little car, great sound and flat got it, but never would perform at its capabilities because of that transmission. I would swap meet it out and install a Super T10 or(bellhousing issues?) bullet/billet proof T10.
You DID check the fluid level AFTER you put it in the car, right? You might get lucky, but I'd just about bet it's time to yank it back out, and at least take the side cover off for a look see. If no gears or syncros are obviously chewed and the pilot shaft bearing in the crank is OK, it's time to pull it down and check (in no specific order) countergear shaft needle bearings (two rows), front bearing, cage bearing inside the rear of the input shaft (main drive gear in GM parlance), rear bearing, and the speedo drive gear. If it turns out it's time to easter egg in another transmission, all GM spec BW T10s, Super T10s, and 92 back V8 T5s, Saginaw 3 and 4 speeds, Muncie 3 and 4 speeds should fit the bellhousing. Get a new throwout bearing, and you'll need a clutch disc if you need to change to fine splines from co**** or visa versa.
I did put in a new pilot bearing and it does have new gear oil. Can it be the shift linkage is not adjusted correctly?
