I'm considering changing my power steering pump and using a saginaw pump instead of the regular ford pump. I have put two new pumps so far on my car and both whine so bad that I'm getting tired of it. I was wondering if anyone has done this swap? I have heard that some ford car or trucks used a saginaw pump. It would be great if there was one that would fit my bracket
I used the ND Gearheads bracket and Saginaw pump on my y-block 55. The bracket is way over engineered and clunky, but fits and works well. I'm pretty sure there are a few others making y-block brackets these days.
Found a March bracket to match what is on the engine. A little pricey at $135.00, guess I'll put up with the whine for a while.
I'm running a 5.0 roller crate engine with 98 explorer EFI. I used March brackets for the front dress so I could use an older timing cover with dipstick and a front sump oil pan. If I had it to do over I would use the explorer front dress. I would have had to make some kind of provision for a dip stick on the pan. The late model timing cover is to thin to drill for the dipstick. I would have had a lot more room for a fan and not had to fabricate a crankshaft timing bracket. Although what I have works to perfection. I thought it was a real treat to not have to tune the engine manually, the ecm takes care of everything. Ralph
I have March V-belt pulleys on my 5.0 when I added A/C I used this company for the 3 groove crank pulley you might see what they have: http://www.cvfracing.com/ford-pulleys-s/33.htm All USA made and less than March and good customer service.
I'm running a Saginaw PS pump on my car with a Borgeson box. So far, so good. I did have some issues with the Borgeson 302 bracket... they had it listed on their website under the '52+ Ford Car section, but it positioned the bump so far out away from the engine that it was hitting the upper control arm. I ended up having to drill new holes in the bracket. Here's how far out it was... Also, I would recommend finding a reservoir can that doesn't have the return line that curves down to the bottom of the can. I started with one of the generic GM chrome cans I found on Ebay but the return line just got in the way. So I found one from a 75-82 Corvette where the return line come out at just a slight angle down.
I'm looking for one with 2 returns since I'm using hydroboost on my brakes along with power steering. I've been told to keep the returns separate, since the boost doesn't work as well with backpressure. Looking online at what I can buy the returns seems to be everywhere.
I had a reservoir made by an ebay seller. He added some height to his normal tank to make room for a second return line (both an6?). I also had him change the bottom supply line that runs to the pump to a push on type fitting so I could use my oem pump with no supply tube mods. The entire reservoir was stainless, had internal baffle, and a pressure relief hole. The bracket were aluminum. His charges if I remember were around 125. incl shipping. Excellent communications and workmanship. I believe I had in in 3 days after our final go-around with communications. If that's in your price range, I'll post a pic and find his contact info.
Thanks anyway, I get my parts from the junkyard. I get a kick out of it when I realize what I could have spent compared to what I have. My car would quit running with something that nice on it.
Good luck finding something...jfyi....the Mustangs that use the hydroboost do not use a 2 inlet reservoir...just a t or y in the lines. Some of the f series pickups have a reservoir with 2 returns, but finding one in a salvage yard that had a hydroboost was imposible in my neck of the woods (but then again, this is Texas, we don't have woods). The f series would probably be larger than we would want anyway, judging by the size of the reservoirs on the non-hydroboost ones I looked at.
It would be pretty easy to just add a bulkhead barb fitting to the reservoir as well if you didn't want to run a 'T' in the line. The flat area above the bulge on the back of the reservoir that you can see above is all just empty space (well, fluid-filled space), so you could just dump your second return into there.
I'm sure I'll buy a rebuilt pump just need to find one with returns in somewhat the right direction. Right now leaning toward 1980 K10, $56.00 includes $11.00 core charge. Since it going to cost me almost $200.00, due to March Performance bracket, I'm in no hurry.
cvf racing has really nice stuff and I think they have the bracket your looking for also as well as sell a saginaw pump to go with it. Their saginaw pump is 1200 psi and would probably need to reduce that if you used it. Their email support was quick to answer my questions so you could email them to be sure of what you want. http://www.cvfracing.com/Ford-289-302-or-351W-Saginaw-Steering-Bracket-p/302-psbrkt-s.htm http://www.cvfracing.com/Saginaw-P-Series-Power-Steering-Pump-Keyway-Shaft-p/saginaw-pump-key.htm http://www.pscmotorsports.com/ford-289-302-351w-saginaw-p-s-pump-bracket.html other info http://classicbroncos.com/forums/showthread.php?t=77804 http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/general-4x4-discussion/104984-ford-302-power-steering-pump-swap.html
Maybe check with March and see of they have a bracket to convert to the GM type 2 pump that is commonly used in aftermarket front setups. I agree, the FORD pumps are so noisy and they just get worse. http://www.krcpower.com/
Received my March bracket today, which matches my alternator bracket. Just need to source the pump and fittings.
