Neighbors kid needs a new ignition lock cylinder for a Saginaw column out of a '78 Cherokee Chief(Wagoneer). We are not sure if it is a '1st design' or a '2nd design'. I want to say it is a first design as it does not look like other columns from late 70's-90s vehicles. Google has been useless. Does anyone know how to tell one from the other? TIA
look at the pretty pictures? http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/x,carcode,1179390,parttype,10041 I think that might be around the time they changed the lock retention from spring loaded tab, to screw. Take yours apart to figure out what you have
First design has the piece on the end of the lock that you push down with a flat blade screwdriver to release it from the column. Second design has the screw that holds the lock in place and you have to take the screw out. I've got both here and have had several of both apart but have no idea of how to tell them apart from the outside. Either should be readily available at most any good parts house so it won't be an issue of finding one after he has the column apart.
i used to think the tabs where the key went in were just a little different between the 2 styles but i was wrong so unless you take it apart you won't know. jeep dealer might know and have a pic on micro fish. should be under $20 at the local parts house.
