This is a cool old thread. Some of these builds are just amazing! Here's mine. Everyone laughed at me when I drug this home. It looks complete but it sure wasn't. It's just kind of plopped together being held by wire and gravity. It's come a long way in the time I've had it. It's just about ready to move under it's own power, then come apart for paint.
Geez...been almost a year since anyone posted, so I'm going to revive this thread. If you like seeing old rusty unrestored race cars, this links to the Mid State Antique stock car club's projects page: http://midstateantiquestockcarclub.com/odds_ends_projects1.html Lots of neat pictures of "un-restorable" cars turned race car projects.
thank you for reviving this post! I drug my feet on a 40s ford truck up the road and I think it got scrapped. It was only visable in the winter. It was rusted up 6-8 inches, but after seeing what everyones been doing, the top half was definately useable. I really just wanted to set it up in my yard...
Thanks for the revive! I love going to "high class" rod shops and posing as a scrap buyer in rags. Glad to see people building rusty non Southwest stuff for a change. I repair 50+ years of GA humidity, not So Cal sun. All these rust builders are welcome on my friends list, I need more ingenious conversation. Pics in a bit, from my shop computer.
If I had those here I would be trying to "restore"them as what they are Antique race cars.lots of clubs forming around these old cars today
I really like this car. Any more pics you can post? I know of a '37 Chevy 2dr sedan that i would like to do that style.
Anything is restorable, here's the sheetmetal I cut out of a derelict sedan, then what it ended up as, didn't have a pattern, so it won't pass as as 'restored". Ha.
Man..this thread got drug back from the dead like most of teh cars... Here is an update on my Merc. I have posted these pics a million times, but what teh hell... Before. After. This Merc now lives with my uncle, so I had to drag home some more crap.. The 39. And, a 34 coupe I couldn't live without... -Abone.
NOt hamb friendly but this was my first project when i was 16, start to finish in one year, the day before the trip to the Pumpkin Run.
There was a '32 3 window dirt tracker on eBay a few years back I was bidding on, but backed out 'cuz I couldn't figure out a way to get it here from Texas. I think a "street" dirt style car is in my future, eventually.
I ask myself why sometimes: Here is what I started with more than a year ago: How it looked before I blew it apart for paint and im 400 grit short of color.
I can tell you exactly where to find that body if you want to figure something out. It will need part of a sedan top or something though, to patch up the A-posts and front of the top.
...very interesting thread, keep em comin...my 32 DeSoto coupe looks 1/2 restored compared to some of these projects! "Save the vintage tin".
John, was that #16 coach Bobby Brueckner's??? Also the #13 was Gary Balough?? Thought that chev coupe #20 looked like one of Tommy Hankamp's... Thanks for the pics!! gaspumpchas
These were part of the Bowman collection that was auctioned off about 4 years ago. Any HAMBers end up with them?
Are these at your place ?If so PM me the details I'm still looking for a racer to rebuild I don't care atall about the running gear just need front end chassis and shell as it just happens I'm using a dodge 318 drive line ! Thanks leon
Hey... I know its a "Big" Truck and definately restorable, but it is just too neat to do anything with but make yard art....The truck was running when parked in this spot 20 odd years ago by the previous owners. There is a sister (or maybe brother) truck in the vicinity that is the same color with a dump bed as well that I might try to get someday to keep it company.
I was 9 when my Dad moved us further out into the country in 1961. There was a half mile dirt track less than 2 miles away that I snuck into as often as I could or peeked under the gaurdrails till spotted. The 2 classes that raced where either 6 cyl. or V8 jalopies. I'm from a large family, but the only one hooked on cars since before I started school. I found a cleared yard surrounded by trees full of cars behind a service center that was back off the road. There was nothing but complete 30's and 40's coupes and sedans that looked like they were simply parked for mechanical reasons. Nothing was wrecked or picked over. What appeared to be one of the first in the back corner was a complete 32 Ford Vicky that the top and upholstery had gone bad from time. But solid and straight. Most were up off the ground and there wasn't much brush or weeds at all. I snuck in on this field of dreams whenever I could and was never chased off as it seemed no one cared, but I was looking for the day I might have my pick of the litter. With the jalopy track so near, I thought for sure it would be found and stripped before I came of age to grab what would be my dream ride. But the track changed to late model cars (mainly 55 thru 57 Chevy's). Next thing I knew, the lot was being cleaned out for scrape metal. Too young to do anything about it, but in so much pain at the thought of my dreams being melted down for dog food cans. Yes, it was at a time when you still had to crank the camera forward to take the next picture, but I wish I could show you what will always be my field of dreams that disappeared. Sure wish someone would have saved those cars for me and others. But you can save what you still find for another 9 year old that has the same dreams I did. I'm sure I wasn't the last one with a hot rod dream.... Sir Woosh
