That had to be a gas to strip it down and see the original work done by the hands of one of the masters of kustomizing! Then to bring it back to Sam's original build and design..... Thanks for the pictures.

  2. Beautiful work. I sure hope you get it to Paso I would love to see it in person.
Here is a link to Riksters Sam Barris Merc page. He has some great shots of the restoration and the car as it was originally.

It is definitely the first 49-51 merc that Sam chopped but there is some debate if it was the first as the Ayala's chopped the Bettencourt merc at about the same time.

WOW...How great that would be to see, and work on, a great piece of history.

Just curious to know if Johnny Barris, Sam's son, knows about this restoration? I'm sure he would like to see the completed project. If you need to get ahold of him, let me know. My wife and him went to high school together.

    Hey There

K13 is correct, it is one of the first Mercs chopped,

To give you a idea on what it was like to strip this car...

It was kinda like banging hole for the first time.
You were so excited and didn't know where to start...
Here is a bare metal pic and the Motor Trend cover 1951

The Ala Kart was at Juniors in LA , but has been stored in Nor Cal for the a few years now.

And as far as the prom my date didn't give it up, so I aint either

    Later
