San Francisco Rod and Custom Show - NO Suede? Why?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by coolstuff, Oct 30, 2008.

  1. The suede cars are a draw because everybody can't afford a $100K rod, so they want ideas of what they actually can do. Lots of younger guys spend time in the suede palace because of that, they may not pop for the spectator entry fee if there are only cars they can't identify with.

i took my caddy in 2006 there was about 50 or 60 suede cars there that year ,i was going to take my 55 chevy last year but you put on here it was going to be in a tent and only about 30 cars were allowed, maybe thats why no one sent in an application

I didn't go last year because of the promoters poor at***ude. I didn't feel very welcomed the last time I went. We were told that we could not hang out by our cars... The suede area was packed the last time I went... Perhaps it was there falt they had low attendance last year.
I don't belive that I will not putting my car in another Perry event. That is only my opinion and mine alone..

Sorry to divert the attention from San Francisco to Sacramento - My apologies.
For those that don't know my wife and i were asked to ***ist the producers of the Sacramento Autorama in creating a Suede Pavilion with a smaller setting where Quality instead of quan***y could be more of the focus. We were asked to help promote and organize this in a very short time, shorter than i usually feel comfortable. Considering some of the obstacles we faced, the Tent/building ended up being full of Suede & painted cars, lots of vendors, great live entertainment,a Pin Up contest, and of course TJ's Pinstripers Ball. I don't ever recall telling anyone that we only had room for 30 cars but if i did i know that i welcomed everyone to be a part of the Suede building right outside - just like how the GNRS is. Applications did come in up until the last minute, we filled the Tent to full capacity, and at the end of the weekend everyone was happy, and that my friend is what its all about. We welcome you and your pals to be a part of next years show where we have the green light to spread our wings, have more room to house more cars, vendors, and special guests. Thanks, Axle

A couple of thoughts/comments for this thread:

    - We, my club that is, had 13 cars in the "car club" area, right next door downstairs to the suede area at the cow palace 2 or 3 years ago. There were a couple of reasons behind this. The first being that we were told that we would not be able to park together as a club. This ended up not being true. We were told that some of our cars would not be aloud in the area because of the "shiny" paint aspect. This also ended up not being true. (Please tell me how you shoot flake without using clear?) The kicker was the entrance fee. $100 as a club for the "car club" area or $40 or $45 for each car in the suede area. Not really a hard choice there. But it was a complete cluster-****!

From my prospective the SF Rod and Custom show is missing some direction, cohesion, and management. I am not going to spend hard earned dough to look at a "custom" nova parked next to a "custom" 80's thunder-chicken next to the "Ron Simms" motorcycle room. Maybe that's why gate numbers are down???

I remember going to the Cow Palace for the GNRS and seeing cars that blew my doors and made me what to leave right there and go home and work on one of my projects in the garage! That was worth the money.

Rolf and Alex had an uphill battle with the promoters and I do not envy the issues they had to contend with to organize that part of the show.

    - What happened to the shows and swap meets that were happening at the Alameda Naval base?

    - Anyone think of doing a show at the Santa Clara Fairgrounds? That was where the San Jose Motorama shows took place back in the '50's. Indoor / Outdoor setup and at least a million people live in San Jose, seems like an ideal opportunity to me.

There was actually 75 cars on the floor in 2006. We were lucky to get that many with only a 30 day notice.

LET ME START WITH A DICLAIMER .
THIS WILL PISS SOME PEOPLE OFF !
I THOUGHT MUCH OF THE COUNTER CAR CULTURE DID NOT NEED CAR SHOWS TO BEGIN WITH .IT WASN'T ABOUT COMPE***ION IN IN THE FIRST PLACE.tHATS THE PART OF THE HOBBY PEOPLE COMLAIN ABOUT MOST .SO IF THE SUEDE BRIGADE IS NOT WELCOMED "SCREW EM "PRIME IS THE CURRENT BIG DRAW.IF THE PROMOTERS
(NOT ALL BUT SOME ) WANT YOUR MONEY BUT NOT YOUR CARSDON'T GO TO THE DAMN SHOW.DON'T MAKE A BETTER SHOWING OUT IN THE PARKING LOT THEN PAY TO GO IN.THEY GOT YOU ANYWAY AND YOUR CARS ON DISPLAY TOO.
IF YOU BAY AREAGUYS WANT TO DO SOMETHING COOL .TRY THIS HOW ABOUT ALL GETTING TOGETHER AT A SOCIAL EVENT VENUE ,HAVE A HUGE BOWOUT PARTY AND INVITE ALL H.A.M.B. ERS TO TAKE PICS AN FLOOD CYBERSPACE WITH PICS OF THE KIND OF CARS WE ALL LIKE TO LOOK AT IN THE FIRST PLACE.
    JUST A THOUGHT !

  8. Can't get your suede in to the SF Rod & Custom Show? Don't sulk... I just heard the Last Originals CC and the Laf-a-Lots CC are throwing an all-day party/Car Show on Saturday, February 21st starting at 10am at the 7 Mile Club located at 2800 Bayshore (at Geneva) in Brisbane, CA 94005. Suedes will be welcomed with open arms and you can park next to whoever the hell you want. Oh and a special note to the ratrodders.... you won't need to walk around with bottles or pay outrageous registration or entry fees, the 7 Mile Club will have a full bar loaded and ready for your drinking enjoyment plus live bands! More details to follow.

Umm.... I wasn't paying attention to the rest of the thread, but can I make a suggestion?

We need a play in the dirt track event, like those guys have back east.

    Altamont Raceway? Please?

Altamont isnt dirt, nor would I put on an event there after hearing a few stories about how it is run.

There is dirt track racing after Billetproof every year... no one goes. We've offered discount tickets for YEARS, no one buys them.

The problem with the dirt tracks in the summer, is that they all have races at them on the weekends. No way to get a hot rod event in there.

I love the idea of a party at the 7 Mile House... but where is everyone going to park? There is room for about 10-15 cars on the street in front of the place at best.

Can you drive your own hot rod at the dirt track thing after Billetproof? I've thinking of this:

that would be a tough one...

the track already has a full schedule of racing for the evening. Last year the Hard Tops (vintage dirt track cars) that were on display at the show had their own racing cl***. They got out there and tore it up. But they are set up as full on race cars, roll cages and safety equipment.

There are a couple of factors that point towards the answer being no...

The stands are full of spectators that are there to see racing. Just letting some hot rods out to go around the track one at a time isnt that exciting for the crowd. Fun for the hot rod owner? Sure. But not for the paying customers.

If you get more than one out there at a time it becomes a race. To race you have to have all the safety equipment, roll cage, window nets... all down the line.

so its just not going to happen at the CA Billetproof.

  15. The Last Originals CC said there is an empty lot across the street that they will be using.

I read recently that The Cow Palace is getting torn down soon. Long way out, but in Stockton is Rough and Ready Island that used to be all Military. Now has some open buildings. Also, Fairgrounds in Stockton are not used much. Fred's Circle Track Swap was just there.

not sure how big of show you are trying to put on.... look into Pacifica, there is a bowling alley off HWY1, (its been awhile but it may be called Sea Bowl) and should fit quite a few cars. also, it is across the hwy from the beach and restaurants.

  20. Sea Bowl is still around. The Last Originals do their annual car show there.

For a show in Stockton as an added bonus the 99 Speedway is going to reopen in March with car shows, motorcycle races, figure 8 racing and NASCAR races.
The Fairgrounds and buildings at Rough and Ready Island have lots of room.

man, you cali guys piss and moan alot!!!! ;) haha..... shows are very pricey to do, and only thing you can hope for is good weather! without it, your done!!!!
ive been approached about doing a show in southern mo, a second Rust Revival show... the hotel has 33k square ft indoor arena, with no pillers or carpet....and over 700 parking spots for the arena....plus 350 spec. parking!!! really had my gears turning, but its just soooo much money, i dont think i could ever pull it off...i mean, yr one would have to draw a full crowd, worlds of vendors, and a few hotrod celebs to even break even.....but, im still playin the powerball, so heres hoping!!! ;P

it worked! the cow palace was a ghost town on saturday and about 400 cars came and went to the last laf! rick told me that the reason he did not include the show downstairs was because it looked like a junk yard. i also know people in the cow palace that said that the people downstairs brought there own food and beer and they lost a lot of money on us. the other reason was that we did not follow the rules and crossed the lines to our cars and had people pinstriping them and working on there cars during the show!?! the promotors staff went to the last laf and about fainted when they saw the number of cars that showed. we have a go for next year if we want to do it. on behalf of both of our clubs that sponsored this a big thanks to everyone that showed up and putting the word out for us. the greatest thing was when the show ended and people left at 5pm is when the rain started. see you at seabowl on june 28th!
