I'll jump in on this. I blasted my drums. Surfaced them. Put em on and ran em. Took the car apart. Painted them. Decided I didn't like it and blasted them again. Threw em on. Now I'm gonna run em. It never crossed my mind to resurface them. And I know I'll be fine. Sometimes we worry too much :)

Here is another angle. I have fixed up old cars that sat around so long, the brake drums were rusty on the inside. But the rust was not even, it was different where the shoes touched from where they didn't. This made the drum lumpy and sanding would not take it off even. But a brake lathe would.

I found if I sand blasted them they worked fine even if they were a little pitted. After sandblasting I like to give them a rub by hand with 120 sandpaper to smooth them off and clean off embedded sand but I doubt it makes any difference. The sandblasted surface will give the shoes a good bite and will soon smooth off. It will probably make the shoes break in faster and work better.

If you do this on the front drums you must protect the inside of the hubs and bearing races from the sand. And when you finish, clean off every spec of sand, clean out the hub, wash out all grease, get them spotless clean then repack with grease and put on a new grease seal before you put it together.
