I have an old flathead that came off a 235ci Desoto engine that I was considering doing a bit of milling on and replacing the one on my 230. I have thrown it in the parts cleaner at my work and that helped a little with getting some of the old grit off it. The question is what is the best way to go about cleaning one of these old heads? Obviously I don't want to do anything that will compromise the head.

The best way to get a head or a block perfectly clean involves hot-tanking it and then blasting it with crushed walnut shells while it is rotated in a cabinet. To have this done here in Phoenix, call Chuck's Speed Center at (602) 266-5101. They now own the machine that Beck Racing Engines used to use and sold when they switched to building engines with new blocks and heads.

    Hey,

I'd lean toward dipping for the reason that dipping will not only remove
the rust and paint on the outside, but the scale inside of the water
passages as well. That's something that sand blasting won't do.
