If you don't know any old timers, jump on Ebay and get some old (not 70s-80s; but 50s-60s) magazines; you'll learn a lot. The dream was to have a beautiful paint job, and also go fast, of course.
Magazines from the 50's and 60's,like today, show magazine quality cars.Top of the line builds in their day. It's a nice view with rose colored sun gl***es.
Hey 64Ville, don't sweat the heat. Guys around here get bent out of shape about a lot of things. It's just that we see a lot of guys (who think they're cool) because they got a primered/satin ride, and we just feel it's really played out. So some of us may have a hard time understanding why you would want to take away good paint, to make primer. (Which usually comes before paint!) But hey if you want your car to look that way, go for it. I guess some people would just have a problem with it because it kind of makes you look like a buster. You know? Like, "Well, I have a Caddy with paint, but I want to look like a poor hoodlum who can't afford paint, so I'll just sand that junk off." So I think that's what some people may be getting at, but you've already explained why you're doing it, so like I said; don't sweat it. P.S. No offence to any of the guys with primered/satin rides- there are some sweet ones. 8)
I ran satin paint on my 55 a few years ago. I'll never do it again. It was a real pain in the *** to keep clean, and never looked decent. It also didn't make me cool.
Its all about what you like, again what you like. I see many things that I don't particularly like, but I respect the owners version of what makes him happy. I have done many things with my rides that my closest friends don't care for. Doesn't mean horse $hit to me what they think. We are still friends but I build mine to suit myself.
Well yes, and no.... The dream WAS to have a beautiful paint job, and also go fast. But the magazine cars were just a small fraction of the hotrods on the street, and not really indicative of the majority of rides. I do agree it is a wonderful place to start, but many magazine cars were beyond what guys could afford to build, so we just took some ideas from those cars. But the shiny paint part? Absolutely... "Magazines from the 50's and 60's,like today, show magazine quality cars.Top of the line builds in their day. It's a nice view with rose colored sun gl***es." THAT car was never in a magazine!
Some of you people need to learn how to read. He asked IF it can be done, and if so, how. He didn't ask if he SHOULD do it, nor for opinions on flat v shiny. Why does this always have to be a ******* contest?! Yes, it can be done, and as others have said, a Scotchbright pad and water works great. If that's the look you are after, then go for it! And post pix!!
I don't agree with your plan but it's not up to me to make that decision, so if it's what you want your car to look like...Go for it. It's a **** load of work if you want it to look nice and uniform and an enormously large **** load of work to correct with a buffer later on if you decide you want it shiny again. It takes me an average of 135 to 200 hours to color sand and polish a car, but I'm pretty fussy. As mentioned previously, 2,000 or 3,000 will do the job. The finer the sandpaper the higher the "sheen". Try to sand in one direction only to minimize the appearance of a sanded surface, and the effects can be reversed by buffing the car...***uming there is enough material left to buff Also, you need to know that by sanding the surface you're "opening" it up and it will now absorb moisture, even if it was painted with a chemically hardened material. If your keeping the car outside or using it in a high humidity environment, you might want to consider this drawback.
i dont think he was asking to be shown "how it really was" , im pretty sure he was asking a simple question about making HIS car look the way HE would like it to look and now we've got 3 pages of peoples opinions with a few real anwsers mixed in ......most of the time on here you've got to sift through 100 pounds of ******** to get a pound of help
So to eliminate 100 pounds of ********, you add your opinion to the mix? I apologize for attempting to guide a younger member...
This is right on. After reading through all 3 pages I think I'm going to put anything paint related on the back burner and focus on what the car actually needs. I guess I just got a little carried away seeing all the *****in' satin/flat paint jobs on here.
Cool car, but I bet he did everything he could to make it look better and not a damn thing to make it look worse. Of course making it fast was probably job one.
my opinion ? i like satin paint , i like shiny paint , however i've never turned shiny paint into satin paint , which is what he was asking about . i dont think he asked if people thought satin paint ****s or if its cool ,. or "what would they have done back in the day?" your guidance was basically giving your opinion to a question that was never really asked
Don't do it man... I know that flat paint is the cool thing in some circles and I get it... My a-coupe is in primer at the moment... But don't take something as timeless as a cadillac and go backwards with it. Listen to the fellas that have been around. Learn... You will be so happy you did in a few years.
True. But Ed has been around... Ed knows his ****... And his guidance is a good thing. The idea is to influence - that's all. As for gloss to flat, I agree completely.
There is no such thing as a stupid question, if you dont know the answer. Just wet sand the car like you are going to buff it out, and progress with finer grit sand paper until the surface is smooth, same as you would do with single stage paint. Good Luck.
Everyone is telling u to sand away.. I believe I read you where going to scratch the idea and move on to other things the car actually needs..Jus remember. If ya get a wild hair up ur *** and start sanding away dont cut to much. I dont know if this car is stock paint or a repaint or how much has already been cut from the car but if ya start to jus lightly sand dont get buck on it or u might jus start scuffing the color. Granted this might sound stupid to many on here but this cat said he was using this car as his"first" to learn on. So jus remember be real light on edges or u will go right through them.
"I know what you're thinking. "What kind of pomade is he wearing. But seeing this is Murray'S Pomade, the most powerful pomade in the world, and could s**** the tattoo of a fake Betty Page wannabe's fat *** clean off, you gotta ask your self one question, "Is my car rusty enough to be on the cover of 'Ol Skull Rodzzz?" "Well, is it , PUNK?!?!"
