    Hello,

Tourmaline Beach is one of the few places where one can drive down to the edge of the sand and beach. No need to break out the pair of binoculars to check out the waves. The waves are well known and it gets crowded fast, due to the direct ocean access and parking along the entrance road. Plus, it is La Jolla.

If one wanted to surf here when the waves get good, then a 4 am sunrise time is preferrable to the 8 am surf check with 25 people already in the water.

Arriving early to any surf spot is much better if you are traveling. It may not be your home court, but at least, you get a fighting chance to ride some uncrowded waves for a couple of hours, until the locals or other travelers arrive at a later hour.

We checked it at 4:30 am dawn breaking at Tourmaline and it was good. Empty parking areas were barren except for one van. But, Windansea Beach was better, two miles North and there we surfed at 5 am. No one on the beach. YRMV

    Note:

On the day/week in 2023 December/ 2024 January of the largest waves ever to hit So Cal beaches and also Northern California West facing beaches, places like this were extremely dangerous. The swells and consistent waves pounded the surf breaks and rolled up into the low level beach parking lots.

    Note 2:

As Martha Reeves and The Vandelas said:

Nowhere to run (Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide)
Nowhere to hide from you, baby
Just can't get away from you, baby (Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide)
    No matter how I try
I know you're no good for me
But free of you, I'll never be
