This is an amazing thread. What method are you using for welding the sheetmetal?? Mig. Tig or Oxy Acetylene??
Interesting you asked about the welding. I welded the roof with oxy, and everything else so far with Mig,.... but found a nearly new Lincoln tig in chicago. From here on the welds will be tig...I will have to teach my self and fast!!! Tig will be used for sheet steel, and heavy chassis work. Mig for all spot welds.
Andy Vinegar is like molassis on steroids, it works fast . I only use it for a day or so, scrubing inbetween and watching the progress. It will eat the steel as well as rust. Ford backing plate are done, but need the surface rust cleaned off. Will see if I get to this tomorrow. Spent the day sorting out carb problems on my son's 51 pickup.
Here's a few pictures of the qtr splice. At this point I have tack welded in the qtr to roof patch and the qtr.
Jeffery, thanks for looking at the qtr. I think I have enough pieces to make this one now. I got the front of a 32 sedan qtr, the lip that fits to the post, when I bought the back window. This was the piece that concerned me the most.
WOW,, Great work and to think I have been compaining about the condtion of the rear panel of my delivery. I did manage to find a tudor back panel to make a patch from, but have not found a decent solution for straightening the panel formers. I completely replace the lower quarter from a couple of donor tudors, so those were no problem. Only to have your talent. Rod
Just wondering if you have had to track down missing pieces or have the pieces found you? This really is a fast paced body save, and I get the feeling people want to help with needed bits. Bob
The37Kid Good Question...To kinda recap I blew out my knee while on a trip to Dallas for work. (actually running acroos the street to the resturant and stepped in a hole , hidden by the way the grass was cut) The night before the surgery I was on ebay, a guy in Ohio was selling a firewall for a 32. I noticed that the front half of a 32 ford 4dr was in the picture he showed. Post gave his telephone number. Called and struck a deal. The rear half of the coupe, less right qtr came from Alexandra La and is pictured in my aviator. Was posted for sale on hamb. Kept the qtr and sold the door and cowl. With this purchase i got the rough 32 qtr (the black and orange one i showed early on), and a very rough frame (covered with ice when I bought it and could not really tell the condition). I purchased a set of 32 4door rear qtr windows from a fellow hamber out of Canada. drip mouldings, drip inserts, roof curve section, roof opening edge came form these. I found a rear window from a 2dr 32 sedan, guy was from outside Dallas. With this I bought parts of the qtr window openings, basically the bottom of the window opening and top of the qtrs. Traded the rough 32 frame for the rear half of a 32 qtr panel. It's the flat black qtr in the later picturez. Dash from ebay, it's a mess. Might work on it this afternoon. both boy's need help on thier vehicles so we will see how the day goes. Really need qtr window and back window garnish mouldings yet. help
It's nice to see another 5 window come back from the dead. Do you do this kind of work for a living or do you teach yourself and learn as you go? What ever the case, You do some nice work! Subscribed!
I am glad to see someone do something with this stuff, I thought about buying that cowl, doors and old frame from kenny a couple of years ago, But shipping killed the deal. When he first got that stuff it had a super nice 5 window complete quarter panel with it that he had already sold on epay. I did buy the real nice coupe door that was with this stuff when he first got it. looks like you are doing a real good job with it, I will be watching for the finished product. and if I can be of any help just let me know
Been a few weeks since my last update, so here is an update. As I mentioned before I purchased a set of brookville subrail cutoffs. I am making the remainder of the rails here is some of the process i used.
Subrails are the scariest thing for me when it comes to thinking about my '32. Everything is based off of them and I want to get them right. It looks like I'll be saving your pics for a later date because you've got it all coming together nicely.
Fantastic progress on some rough bits and pieces! It looks great and its inspiring to see what can be done if you really want to! Ive got the makings of a 32 3 window which is very rough missing the doors roof and top of the cowl .......makes me want to get on it!!
Thanks for the nice coimments, and yes it was nice working with some 18 guage NEW sheetmetal Here's a couple more shots
This is like looking into a mirror Great job so far. One tip, dont lock your rear quarters in, until you have the boot lid hinged and aligned to the edge under the rear window.......ask me how I know and if you use a brookville lower boot lid panel, they are too wide and need to be sectioned if you want a nice boot gap.
Human Fly your absolutely right. I bought a lower panel (below the decklid) from Tom Bay and the inner structure from Brookville. I had to modify the brookville panels to get everything too fit together. There will be lot's of mock up, I want the gaps right!! More on that later.
Totally impressed by your dedication and belief in your ability. Wish I had metal working skills as I'm in a quandary about trying to save an old body ('29 roadster) or look for a better one! Love to see another five window brought back to life!
. It was an honest question!!! Haha!! Oddly enough even though I'm not touching my 32 for a long long time, I ended up scrubbing down a lower (boot) tail panel from Brookville that I had laying around because it had surface rust on it from sitting. Good to know even though I got it looking pretty I'll still have to cut it up!
I decided to use Electrolysis vs blasting to clean the rust off the metal. Very quick but kind a messy. Used a 12v battery charger. Rebar from Menards and a home made tub double lined with plastic. The rust turns balck and washes off with water and a wire brush.
Wow, awesome! I admire your skill and dedication! Inspires me to go work on my project. I'm subscribed and look forward to your updates.
Been busy working with my son's Datsun but here are a couple updates. Startining to test fot the rear.
