It was ***led "Yank Tanks" and aired on PBS or KET? It was about all of the old American cars in Cuba, what they mean to the people who own them, and what it takes to keep them running in such a closed society. The highlight for me was seeing a guy who makes just about any trim or body part for 50s cars from scratch. Pretty crazy stuff. Airs again 10/19/06. http://www.ket.org/cgi-bin/schedule/episode.pl?nola=VOCE++000105&cd=1&&layout=popup
Thanks! I was reading about this once. A guy was holding some home made piston rings made from a piece of drill stem. Its a testament to American cars that they could still drive them all these years. Everything on them has been rebuilt several times over.
Just bringing this to the top. I noticed they have it on netflix. I haven't watched it a second time yet, but from what I remember it was fairly neat.
Here's a more recent thread: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=549733 And a link to watch it on the interweb: http://www.snagfilms.com/films/***le/yank_tanks_carros_cl***icos_de_cuba/
I've watched it myself. I thought it was a pretty good do***entary, probably the best out of all the old car do***entaries out there.
Craziest things were the guy MAKING brake shoe linings (handling raw asbestos with NO safety equipment); And IIRC they said when it was filmed gas was $4 a gallon and the average Cuban wage was $10 a month?!?
