  4. Wow, awesome car, looking forward to seeing the finished result.

Based on the photo directly above, what color was it in this period of it's life? Obviously dark, is it along the lines of 'Monsoon Maroon' or a 'Meadow Green'? The flowing lines really compliment the darker tones, hard to picture it in a salmon color...

Congrats again, as hard as it is now, this will be another car of distinction.

    Cheers,

    Drewfus

Thank you Drew. I got lucky on this one, I am constantly on the hunt like all of us on this board. All it takes is patience, timing and luck! I think this car would look great in a dark maroon too, but through the old articles I have found, it was definitely black when it was first painted in 1949 or 50. It was painted Coral Red, the salmon color as it appeared in Rebel Without a Cause. I am thinking a deep purple, like an eggplant color as my first 'personal' choice, but the purest in me leans toward black as it was in the beginning.

I would prefer the darker colors also.

I just asked because the movie is so famous and that is how most people will remember it.

I would have to think about that aspect.

I do understand the point you are making, but that is easier said than done. I don't know about you, but I could not handle having a pink-salmon car as pretty as this one is. Even though it was salmon, or coral red as it is referred to, it was originally built black, and it was gold at one time too.

I like it in black personally.

Funny thing about it, I always figured the car was in primer when it was in the movie and that it was probably a work in progress hired for the movie.
I never knew it was actually painted pink.

Congrats on it, can't wait to see it.

Thanks Doc, yeah I really did get lucky on this one, I still can not believe I have it. It has one of the nicest chops I have seen on a 40, I realize the experts here advise to never chop a 40, but I have always wanted a chopped 40. I almost had my gold 40 chopped earlier this year, but held off, I am glad I did. The color is not pink, I was just kidding only because Byron was suggesting pink. It was actually never pink. It was black, then coral then gold, then red, which it is right now. I do plan to paint it to bring it back to it's roots. A friend of mine just sent me a color picture of it in the coral color from the movie, but I do not know how to upload from my Ipad, I will try uploading later.

This is from an article from 1981 Street Rodder compliments of 'Rice&BeansGarage' it was fortuitous Mr. Nicklin kept a diary of the car, it is a great read. I was blown away when I read he went to school at the Art Center College of Design and went on to become a car designer, that is where I went to school and followed the same career path. This was destiny...

The color photo was sent to me from another good friend.
The 1979 photo came from an article from Rod& Custom that I got from the guy I purchased the car from.

That picture still looks a bit like red oxide.

As for the the pink suggestion, yeah...I prefer most cars at they were when they were the most famous. A certain merc is two tone green in most peoples minds and yet it was gold and green. The Kookie T is nothing like it was. I would imagine a lot of people remember that car because of it pulling out when the cops are arriving in the movie and you could clearly see it.

That being said it looks the best when it was first built.

But think of it, you could do it up just like it was in rebel and dress up in a red jacket and go to the James Dean Run as a James Dean impersonator.

I understand and agree with the black, but that thing is absolutely beautiful in the current red, also. Almost looks like Larry Shinoda in the first, red paint (front end shot) picture. DD

You are surely blessed with some amazing cars, this one is no exception. I've loved it since I first saw it on "Rebel" also.
