    Got a SB 283 no. on block is 3896948 which is a 1967 --195 hp 2-bolt main engine. The no on the right front pad is T-0706DE The thing that really I need to know is on the rear of the block where the date code is has CONV-1 . Does this mean convertible or what? Its cast in the block not stamped. Any ideas,I have never seen this before.:cool:

    I think that number on pad tells, what year make and model.

  3. CONV-1 is "Conveyor #1" at the foundry.

    T-0706DE:
    T=Tonawanda Plant
    0706=July 6th
    DE=283/Powerglide

    Thanks ,********. I have 4 other smallblocks and all of them have regular date codes on the rear. This block has no numbers there and the CONV-1 cast no. in from rear to front not side to side like most codes.

    Most 1960s and old blocks do not have the year/make on them. That started around 68 or 69. They only have the engine plant, ***embly date (month/day), and engine suffix. The suffix was sometimes used for several years/models, there are some that were used only for one year/model. The casting date code helps confirm what year the engine was made.

    This engine came out of a 67 chevelle convertible and the nos. match the vin on the car. Just never saw one with the dang conveyor no cast ,not stamped in the block.
