Long time lurker in the forums. Started rebuilding my own stock SBC 350 and was curious if this noise sounds like lifter tick or something more serious.

Sound only comes from driver side valve cover and is accompanied by a matching vibration to the ticking. You can hear it and feel it beating at the same rate if hand is on valve cover. It feels/sounds like it's coming from where the PCV valve goes into the cover.

Valve cover gaskets have been replaced and it appeared that nothing has been hitting valve cover, so I'm curious what the vibration/tick is a result of. Engine runs strong, oil pressure appears fine, and other then the tick being slightly annoying it doesn't appear to be doing anything.

Vibration has also gotten quieter after I put rislone through it and then added lucas stabilizer to a fresh oil change.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Have you checked valve adjustment? It could be something as simple as a loose rocker arm.

I’ve had PCV rattle before. Pull it out while running to see if you feel it rattling in your hand. Then put a finger over the opening to stop rattle “if” this is the case???

I hear two noises. One is kind of a rhythmic thud and the other is a tick when you rev it up. Thud almost sounds like an exhaust leak. Tick sounds like rocker clearance.

Pull the cover start it up and feel each rocker til you find the one ticking.

Sounds good, I'll pull covers and do a valve adjustment. You guys recommend doing valve lash hot or cold? And tighten till clacking stops and do an additional 1/4 turn or 1/2 turn?

    Thanks everyone.

Be careful. If the noise isn't valve adjustment...and you screw the rocker down trying to get rid of it...with the engine running...there's a chance of contacting the piston with the valve...creating more noise:eek: Good luck!

Valid point, I'm hoping it will be more obvious with the covers off.

Honestly, I think it's never been taken apart. Recently acquired from someone who only ran car a few summers but it was sitting for some time before that.

As we've all said try adjusting it. But with this information it could just have lost it's charge of oil. Or if never apart it could be worn on the bottom or flat cam lobe. I think your second sentence talks that you are rebuilding it. Big difference from never been apart.
