SBC 350 PCV question

I have seen the other threads on PCVs but there is something I am unsure of with the new crate engines as compared to the older SBC engines like the 327.

I am aware that the PCV on the 327 had a place at the rear of the block where the PCV was located and it was plumbed into the base of the carb.

Most of the modern SBC engines I have seen have the PCV off the top of one of the valve covers.

    I am wondering this.

If I wanted to install an old style manifold with the oil fill tube and breather, along with a vintage set of valve covers with no holes onto my new 350 crate engine, what would I do for the PCV ?

Thinking of the vintage look for the new engine.
    Thanks.

  2. Get a filler neck for a corvette (early PCV corvette) and an inline PCV valve for the same. the filler neck will have a ****** then the PCV valve goes between the filler nect and the base of the carb.

    That is the simpliest solution.

I personally don't like the oil filler tube return... they don't look right to me.

On my 327, a hole was drilled in the upper part of the valve cover. Some simple tubing was attached and a PCV was run in line to the carb. You should be able to get the stuff at your local Ace Hardware. Looks pretty clean and I like it a lot. Just went to the auto parts store and got a PCV for the year and make of engine.

You will have to have some kind of "baffle" on the inside of the valve cover to impede oil from going in the tube. If you need pics of the actual connection pieces, PM me.

I'd like to use a pair of Cal Custom ribbed valve covers and really don't want to drill them.

Drill a 3/8 hole in the very back verticle cover (mine's next to the column so it doesn't show so bad) thread it, use a street ell off that, hose conn. straight up (oil won't go up) run a vac. line to pcv off intake or carb.
    Done deal-and it does work.

    I just dealt with this.
My 327 has corvette valve covers with no holes and the manifold has the front oil fill. Motors work best being cross ventilated so I removed the intake manifold and drilled a hole in the back of the manifold on the flat surface diagonally to the distributor. I bought a baffled grommet that would fit a PCV valve. Put it all back together, plumed the PCV and it works great.

You also need to plumb in a fresh air inlet into engine to prevent a vac*** in engine. You can run line from air cleaner back to engine.

Doesnt the air cleaner do this?

No look at a factory PVC system , there is always a air inlet and a vac*** valve.

I thought that the oil fill cap which just pushes into the tube and is vented would be enough for that purpose.

My old 283s always had the vented oil fill cap.

I like the idea of putting the PCV at the back near the distributor.

  14. oil fill cap is vented and drill and tap the intake at the rear, then install pcv.

What does the baffled grommet look like and where did you get it ? Any pictures of your setup ?

I don't have a pic right now, will try and get one today. One thing--if you go this route be sure and get a pcv valve that can lay sideways (if you screw it in the carb base)-a lot of them won't work horizontal.

Would you happen to have a part # for that horizontal PCV?
I've been looking for one for my SBF and the local auto parts have no clue what I'm asking for.

Try Corvette Centrals web site they have the oil fill tube screw-in ones that plumb to the base of the carb. I know chevy part on a ford, but if it works. Hope this helps.

Could use this if you have the hole in back of block.

Here is what I did. I used a baffled grommet and the oil fill cap is vented.

That last one looks like a good idea.

I have another question, I have a Holley 4 barrel to use, its one of the 670 cfm aluminum body units, a nice carb.

Where or how can I hook up both the PCV and a hose for vac*** supply to the power brake booster ?

Cool, I'll check them out. I have a 1in. spacer under the carb and it has a threaded plug on the back side. I could make it work.
    Thanks

To be honest I don't know--just went to Auto Zone and they had many of them hung on a rack. I picked the one with 3/8 threads, size of my carb base. To be sure, blow and **** it (I'm sure someone out there will get excited) in the horizontal position. Somewhere in the archive threads there's a listing for a part # for one-I found it when I was searching.
