Technical SBC 350 with 2 barrel rochester rough on acceleration/idle

My son has a '63 inboard ski boat with it's original 327. When he first got it, it popped and backfired accelerating, just like your truck. I put an HEI distributor in it for him, and when putting the new wires on, discovered that the PO had #5 and #7 crossed on the cap. We may not have had to replace the dizzy at all, but it runs like a scalded cat. It's always the simplest things that trip us up.

 

makes sense! I had my wires mixed up in an earlier instance of getting this thing running right but my latest issue that got me stuck was not my doing and a consequence of places like autozone carrying parts made overseas with no quality control!
