SBC decode help please

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Tiny, Oct 26, 2008.

  1. I have a SBC that I got in trade some time back and am trying to decode it. I was told it is a 57 vette but hey isn't that what everyone says?
The markings on the ends of the heads look like a lazy 8 followed by 610. On the front of the block is F515GC. and on the back it looks like 6GM 3731548. Do I have the right numbers does any of this make sense it was alreaedy dark when I wrote the numbers down.
    Thanx

Definitely a 57 283, but can't help much more. Its a one year only motor because it shouldn't have side mounts. The 371548 number tells me that.

    3731548....283...57......2...No side motor mounts
    off Mor-Tec as well
    I'm slow :)

Just found a little more info..
This is for a full size chevy though, not a vette, but it is for 1957. That dosn't mean it wasn't the same suffix for a vette, i just don't have that info so it could be.

    GC 15-21-2400 "283" - 8 Cylinder with Turboglide and 4BC

GC is 57 283 with Turboglide and 4 bbl carb. not used in the Vette....

  6. No side mounts and an oil filter so I guessed it was a 57. Whats up with the wierd 8 followed by 610 on the front of the heads?

The GC suffix was also used in 1956 to designate a 265 with Overdrive. I have not found a GC listing for 1957.

  10. I've been "searching" on here since I posted the question a little while ago. Thanks for that link squirell. It appears to be a 57 283 4 barrel with a turbo glide. I still don't get the lazy 8 on the heads I was reading about it on a nother post but it appears to be in reference to 56 heads. Oh and whats a turboglide? Is that a ancestor to a th350?

  11. OK They were referencing a race car called the lazy 8 DUH!!! WTF DA!!!! I'll pull a valve cover tomarrow and see what the heads are.

The turboglide was a funky 3 speed automatic that used different turbines in the converter for the different gears....so it kind of eased from one gear to the next without really shifting. It was used from 57-61, had lots of problems and design revisions over it's short life, and most folks gave up on them years ago.

  13. The heads are 3748772 which when I look them up is a 58 to 61 283 head. These are offset VC heads though so what are they?

should be a casting date code on each head. Pretty sure the bolt pattern changed in mid year 59.

  15. Thanks squirrel your a wealth of sbc info. That is the casting number I believe.

The casting date code is a shorter set of letter/numbers, see the link to the other thread it explains how to decode them.
