We don't know if engine is stock 305 --- seller told us it as a good engine.

( Good oil pressure / idles smooth/ does not run hot. )

However, it has a ping. Even though timing adjusted, I just added middle grade gas to the tank.
???????? What steps should be taken to eliminate the ping?

    *Reduce ignition timing.
    *Reduce compression.
    *Increase octane.
    *Reduce engine temperature.
    *Reduce engine load.
    *Delay upshifts to avoid lugging.
    *De-carbonize pistons and combustion chambers.
    *Richen fuel mixture.
*Make sure mechanical and vacuum advance are working properly and not sticking.
*Check EGR valve operation if equipped.

Feel free to try any or all of the above.
