Looking for advice on sbc head and intake gaskets. What’s the best head gaskets to get nowadays? Also the block I was given was decked, I guess I’ll be getting some thicker intake gaskets. How much gasket compression should I shoot for? One more question what is a better intake , vortec or the older style bolt pattern? Engine came with aftermarket heads that accept either bolt pattern.

What vehicle, and what is the intended use?

What is the desired performance level?

How much was the block decked? The amount the block was decked will help determine head gasket thickness, and you may have to mill the intake. Your machine shop should be able to help you with how much to mill intake manifold. You’ll have to assemble the bottom end and determine piston to head clearance. IMO .040 to .045 is what I would shoot for. My opinion I think Cometec makes the best head gaskets and available in many thicknesses, although Fel Pro is good stuff also.

88 sbc .060 over aftermarket heads 202 160 valves 64cc chambers. Going in a 31 tudor. I’d be happy with 300 hp. It will be a roller cam. Haven’t figured what yet. Just want a good running engine

I'm running an 010 block (decked .020") with Brodix IK180 aluminum heads, and .060"+ pistons .005" in the hole. I use Fel-Pro #1003 head gaskets (.041" thick) and #1204 intake gaskets. Manifold is not milled, but I did have to slot the intake bolt holes a little. No leaks...

I use FelPro also, and I make sure the head gaskets are specifically designed for either cast iron or aluminum heads depending on which type I'm using. Aluminum heads use specific head gaskets to ensure a good seal with aluminum.
