Just wondering since I have the timing cover off the fly if I should invest in a gear drive? Are they all hype? I have never had anyting more than a double roller chain.

Your CAM timing will be more accurate, but a lot of people feel that the crankshaft harmonics that would get transferred into the camshaft would have a negative effect on IGNITION timing (being that the dizzy runs off of the cam). IMO I'd just run a good double roller, and if you want the CAM timing more accurate, go with an adjustable set and degree yer cam.

Just run a double roller.

If you need that "*****in" sound, I got a whipped old power steering pump you can run without fluid. [IMG]

Gear drives are obsolete.
The big boys run a belt drive now. They run smoother.

Millions of races have been run with a decent double roller chain.
Unless you have a HUGE cam, with monster springs, and will hit 10,000+,it's not a problem.

7. I guess Roothawg you have to ask yourself way you want a geardrive for in the first place? I put one in my SBC about 10 years ago and my reason was I liked the sound. So I chose the extra loud one for that very reason. In regards to cost, yes a double roller chain is cheaper and does a great job! But I have always liked that gear drive sound and have had no problems with it. It sounds as good today as it did back then. Again build the car the way you want it to be for yourself.....Good luck.

A rubber band inside of a big bad V8, and my "honda" has a chain!

Whooda thunk this day would come...

Anyway... a stock, but fresh and new gear and chain setup is more than adequate for a daily beater, correct? or is there added precision in the double roller?

I agree with dubbya, I think a gear drive sounds like ****! It is an obnoxious sound, not a nice mechanical sound. A double roller is far better and if you really want a whine, get a blower!!! Guess you can figure out my opinion.......

Gear drives, all the noise of a blower without all of that pesky performance enhancement.

14. You two are just jealous of my gear drive at the RCN!!
I like mine because- MUCH cheaper than a belt system, I dont know who'd use a belt unless its a race car; not much more expensive than a good double true-roller set; now I dont worry about throwing a chain tooth.
In a 70 year old semi-open car with bias-plys, gear drive noise is the least of my auditory inputs.

You don't run it dry, put type F fluid in it, and if you don't have enough whine with that, get some bubbles in the line. [IMG]

Wouldnt that power steering pump sound more like a hippo getting ****d by an elephant, rather than a blower?

When the one in my caddy ran the last of its fluid out the column seal and it was cavitating in the foam, it sounded exactly like a whale trying to **** out a VW beetle...

ewwwwurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrnkh....
