hey there 68vette, glad I could be a help to you! hope your fleetline is coming along well.
I've been doing some more reading ,sounds like the L79 cam is quite popular?

btw ..i'm probably gona be going with a manual gbox

  2. The 4577 is what GM called special high performance steel crankshaft...if wanting to go with a stock look and good performance, seek out an original 69 Z intake or a Performer RPM which is basically a copy, you could always machine off all the Edelbrock logos etc for a more stock appearing intake, then gl*** bead it.

I would consider going with an original style 327 / 350hp cam and if looking for drivability, you can get the grind in hydraulic, there are of course better grinds and better intakes but if going for a period build, that is what I would do. I would also go with a 600 double pump, dual feed Holley.

"The 327-350hp "L-79" cam is 221in 221ex duration @.050" .447" .447" lift 114LSA. Commonly referred to as the "151" cam. This cam likes compression rpm and rear gear in a 327. Needs 10:1+cr and 4.10's. A 2800/3000stall converter helps too"

    Hey Fleet-Master

My vette runs 11:15 to 1 pistons, has big valve 291 heads, been balanced by Banjo Matthew's speed shop in 1984 when they were running NASCAR. I cannot say for sure mine has a L79 cam....sounds a little like BostonCamaros video. I took the engine builder a new chevy L82 cam which at the time was even more radical I think than the L79 cam....someone told me that cam never got put in my engine....huummmmm...the last time valves were set was by a super vette mechanic...he had to set them with a feeler guage....I think we set one or the other at .012....We set the valves about 5 years ago...no one knows why we have to use a feeler guage but it makes it go.

My fleetline is doing very nicely....It is painted....I am at the start putting things on instead of taking things off...283, Z28 heads, 327-300 cam (great torque and gas mileage cam), specially built quadrajet by me, elderbrock polished manifold, 700R trans, mustang II front, s-10 3.42 rear, ch***is engineering rear springs, one piece windshield,59 caddy tailights, frenched headlights, 59 Impala wheel, 57 caddy hubcaps, air, etc.

    Both engines bored .060 over.

Because it has solid lifters - that would be the only reason.

If you don't know why your engine has solid lifters or shouldn't you'll need to ask the builder or review your paperwork.

    Hey 31 Vicky,

Another mechanic comes over to my vette mechanics place( he did not build my engine) and he works in a shop that builds Canada's Nascar engines and was in Mike Whites shop for a long time.

They are hyd valve lifters....not solid. He said there were two types of hyd lifters....he described both types and said one is for high rev engines and he thinks I have those....says they work really well if you set them with a feeler guage vs the std way to adjust the lifters. He said you can tell them by looking at the top of the lifter....they are different from the reg type.

The vette mechanic who built my engine in 1984( different than mentioned above) is known now to me now to put a few new parts in his vette for free....huuummmmm....but my engine is put together good....I used to go on the interstate and put the car in first gear running 55...then get on it.....1st-2nd then 3rd in less than 5 sec (redlined then some) I would say as by my old feeble memory.

For about 10 grand I will show you some smoke....

Never had a 327 with a M21 I see, you must have missed that.....that means close ratio...that means 1st and 2nd are real close....my ol mechanic had a 327 that he had built that turned 10 grand...

Hmmm...I've never heard of hydraulic lifters being set with a feeler gauge, I suppose it could be done, don't know why though, new one on me......

On my own built 327 I have a solid lifter '70 GM LT-1 cam in it from way back when, and when I freshened up the motor this year, I lashed them a little tighter than stock (cold) and the engine runs really nice and crisp.... quiet too... even though mine has solid lifters, I don't know if I would try to push it to 10K.... pretty sure something would grenade at about 8K..... :)

Holley 300-36 and a 3310 works well on a 327 for your application. Both can be found cheap and are easy to work with. Just my 2 cents which is what it's worth.

I've heard good things about Q-jets in the past and theres a few guys here who love 'em...so Weiand Stealth with a Q-jet?
My heads need reco'ed ...is it worthwhile going to the 2.02" / 1.6" valves? <!-- / message --><!-- sig -->

Again with my Super Stock 2 cents, the same motor that rund low 10's on the quadrajet, also has 1.94 intake valves, and 1.50 exhaust valves. I would say if you have to replace the valves, go for it, but if your valves are good, or you already have a set of stock size valves just stay with it. As someone else was saying here about cam placement, it's all about the set up, and the combonation of parts. Your off to a good start in my opinion with the qjet and the Stelth, and I agree with finding one with a spreadbore pattern to avoid the adapter.

Mr Rustang....you might be surprised....it probably would do close to 10,000 rpm....the engine that did had two tachs on it at one time just to prove it to those "doubting thomas's"...it stayed together for 2 years on the strip...my mechanic was asked many times to build one just like it for others....he just laughed and said he may never be able to build one like that again....he never used a torque wrench on anything...always by feel...and he has set many a rear ends...hundreds I would say...he used to set them all the time for Nascar's Robert Pressley....when I asked him to build my vette engine, he said it took too long and tied up his garage too long....that is when I had the guy who built the engine do in 84.

Anyway...he said my car was the first one with hydraulic valves he had to use a feeler guage on....and he goes back to the A models...we could not get my engine to run worth a **** until he tried the feeler guage...then it made a world of difference....If I run into the mechanic who built the engine in 84...I will ask him about the cam and lifters....I have a feeling my L82 cam was put into his 327 vette...along with my new 3rd and 4th gear cluster he asked for when I did not have an ounce of trouble with my transmission when I had him rebuild my engine.....huuummmmm.

Carb: 650cfm. I loved the sp2P intakes. It was more of a torque manifold, and with a 327 and small head.......it should run Ok.

However, I LOVE 327s. Small journal are better for my needs, but are great motors.

    good luck

Another vote for Weiand Stealth & 600 Holley or the less temperamental Q-Jet.

    300-36 = Ededbrock Performer RPM = factory "Z-28" intake = ??????

Lots of intakes use the same basic design.
