OK, there's a wide variety of recommendations for the "correct" goo to put on head bolts when doing final****embly. I pick on the SBC to illustrate the quandary and elicit the most responses.
    1) Thread sealant AKA pipe dope- to seal threads that penetrate into the water jacket. And which bolts do (water jacket) and which don't (blind hole)? most****embly guides I have seen do not differentiate.
    2) anti-seize is recommended also, but what about sealing the water jackets??
    3) oil, both on the threads and under the head is recommended for the most accurate torque readings

    So, what's the most right?
This will wildly diverge with things like heavy duty blocks, race blocks, aftermarket blocks, iron heads, aluminum heads. but the basic question remains.

If you ever had a head bolt leak around the bolts, you'll only use thread sealant.

No antsieze without reducing the headbolt torque you'll pull the threads out

I used pipe dope. Same goo as the plumbers use. Big Block Chevy. No leaks after years of service. Oil on the blind holes.

Lube under the head of the bolt, or between the bolt head and the head bolt washer to prevent friction at the upper end of the bolt hole boss from affecting the torque applied to the threads.

20230817_201328.jpg GM gasket sealing compound. Same as Permatex, just a bigger can. ;) Has a brush attached to the lid so you can paint steel shim head gasket's with it too! :D

When I put my 355 together with aluminum heads, I used a tube of ARP sealant.
