I KNOW this may be blasphemy but has anybody ever put a SBC in a 56 Ford?I HAVE A 350 THAT NEEDS REBUILDING and it would be cheaper than building my 292.thanks.

Anything is possible but, why would you want to? You can get a 302 on the cheap and have about as much in it as a small block scrubby.

I am sure it has been done many times but this is not the place to look for info. I have a Chevy in my 40 because I did not want to cut the firewall but if a Ford motor fits as easily ,which it does, [in fact fitting a Chevy would require a front sump pan I think] then why not? Sell the Chevy and buy a 302, make life easier.

My recommendation would be to contact Tim McMaster. He built my engine and he usually has rebuilt engines on hand. Not sure of your budget but I paid $3000 for mine. That includes head porting, bigger valves, engine break in,and other performance mods. If you have a specific item such as dizzy or carb and intake he installs and tunes engine with your items. He installed my MSD dizzy and made up the plug wires for no additional charge.

Chevy is a bad fit in your Ford, rear mounted oil filter creates a challenge with the steering box making fabricating an exhaust  also the oil pan issue as mentioned.

Ford FE would be a better choice, and easy to install.

Its been done many times, why I dont know but it has been done. Please don't go that route or if you do don't open your hood at any events. lol. If you don't want to rebuild then go sbf, they are a dime a dozen and you could swap it very easily.

I just did one in my '59 since I already had it. And I wasn't keen on dropping a boat anchor (FE) in it. Doable for sure, I used an early Nova pan. We made up the ch***is mounts, but look up Butch's Cool Stuff. He has a mount package for the swap.
And from now on, you guys will be getting full-size pictures. No more of that thumbnail nonsense.

I've stuffed a lot of sbc's in '30 through '40's Fords mainly because the dimensions of the sbc are close to those of the Flathead V8.

I wouldn't consider a sbc under the hood of a 52-59 Ford,302's are inexpensive and fit like a glove. HRP

I agree on many points. Drop a small block Ford in it. No muss, no fuss. A tougher to find 351C would be better because the exhaust fit is better.
Sell the sbc to fund the project.

Sorry Jimmy... I have a 54 Ford and a 58 Edsel, both all Ford. Wouldn't consider a different engine or anything else for that matter.

I gave a gave a guy on hotrodders.com a bunch of advice on a swap, he has a 302 Ford in a '51 Chevy coupe it actually is a better fit than an SBC in the same car.

I was surprised at how well the Chevy went into my Ford. Once I had the Chevy II pan on it, I started with the mounts. Clearance at the firewall is tight, went with a small-body distributor. The starter comes out easy, fuel line is on the correct side. I doubt a 351 or 460 would have gone as well.

This is what its all about. You learn a lot about people when they slam another guy's build. But it helps me distinguish the real car guys from the posers.
