Anyone have any experience installing a SBC into a 64' Merc Convertable? Do the aftermarket "reverse sump" oil pans they sell for SBC to allow an install into a 62'-67' Nova allow enough clearance to not have any problems with the steering linkage? Anyone's 2 cents on this would be very helpfull. thanks.
My only question is WHY ? I have SBC's in everything I own but a 1964 Mercury is a big old TANK. Why beat your head against the wall when a 390 FE Ford would work great ??
WTF?!!!!! Man you dont deserve that Merc!! Why the hell would you pull an awesome FE mill with tons of torque and horsepower for a little Chevy? And put it into a mid 60's Merc?! Man build the 410!! haul**** and be happy!!!
i knew i was gonna hear it, but I asked anyways! I was just thinkin about the chevy motor becasue we have one here ready to go and Im trying to put this car together for a friend on the cheap. We have a 429 that I just pulled outta Ranchero, but don't have the money to throw into a rebuild. Just weighing our options. Brien
At the Turkey Rod Run in Daytona a few years ago, I parked next to a black 64 Merc convertable with a 427 S.O.H.C and a 4 speed. Now THAT'S an engine conversion.

Never ever ever cut corners. There's building on the cheap and then theres insanity. Now back to your question. The NOVA pan probably won't work. I think that MOROSO used to make a pan to put an sbc in a Ford, you can probably find one of them. If its just money, can you swing a rebuild on a SBF? I got a sepnt one here that you can trade me out of if you want. At least you won't have to fight the chevy into the ford and you can use it in a chevell or something else that will inevitably come along. Drop me a note if you want.
Let me get this straight..... You are trying to save money, so you want to adapt an engine not designed for the application. This will make sure there are lots of special parts required, along with parts that need to be fabricated, and that the vehicle is worth less when it comes time to sell. Ford motors are just not that expensive. This plan is a flat-out bad idea.
theres a place called crites industries that makes everything to bolt a 429 in that car, they're the ones that make all the fiberglass body parts for the thunderbolt fairlanes and lightweight galaxies.
Just tell all the Ford freaks to kiss your**** I pulled the OVERWEIGHT, WORTHLESS,POS, 352 out of my '65 F100 and rolled it off in the ditch where it belongs. Look how nicely the SBC sits down in there. All I had to do was make a crossmember for the*******, the 350 set right down on the Ford frame towers.
There has never been, and probably never will be another engine with all the attributes of the SBC. Like it or not, there is a reason why there are so many on the road. Based on the number of SBC's in Rods and the fact that they started swapping them into other cars as soon as they hit the market in the 50's, I would say that the most TRADITIONAL engine for a Rod of any kind is the SBC.
lots and lots of people watch American Idol and Queer Eye For The Straight Guy.and think its quality TV.....doesnt mean i do.
Use the motor mounts from a 64 chev truck. take your torch and cut a small notch so mount will set in saddle. then the front sump pan will clear. the next proplem is the anti roll or sway bar to clear pan it will need to be moved forward and a mount welded on the lower control arm to remount. you will need to change the lower radiator outlet to the opposite side, hey this is a lot of work why dont you sell the car to me. Happy April fools day or month or wtf Bobby..

[/ QUOTE ] Even if I was inclined to buy into this "herd mentality" way of thinking, it doesn't apply here, since the car in question isn't a "ROD" ...it's more along the lines of a custom or cruiser.
