If the carb is squirting more fuel on one side, look inside the throat beneath where the choke plate is.Should be two large screws. Sometimes,a carb "rebuilder"forgets to install or tighten these.Make sure they're tight. If tight, you may have a bad gasket or warped top plate and/or carb body.

How did you tell the base gasket was leaking, could you hear it sucking air?

Sounds like it is starving for fuel when it dies on you.Try driving with the gas cap removed, see if that helps. If it does it may be faulty.
Check your fuel filter(s).Don't forget a quadra-jet has one built in the carb, behind the fitting your fuel line hooks to.
I'm also wondering if there is sediment in your tank plugging the screen on your pickup tube.

If it cranks after it stalls, why would you suspect the alternator? If the battery ain't dead,it sounds like it's doing it's job.

Also sounds like you may have water in the gas.How long has the truck been sitting? Might be time to drain the tank and take it out to clean it.

What condition are the points and condensor in? They may be shot if you haven't replaced them or if someone left the key on while the motor wasn't running.
Have you put a timing light on it? I find that Chevies like at least ten degrees btdc with the vacuum line disconnected and plugged.
If you can't advance it at least that much, you need to advance your distributer one tooth,or move your plug wires on the cap one position counter-clockwise.

First, don't let that guy work on your schidt anymore
Second, quit pi$$ing off your fine quality Ford pickup by running that cheapa$$ Chebbie in it- it's trying to tell you something.
Jeez, I thought those little Chebbies were perfect in every way, so much more dependable than anything else that nothing else should be considered, blah blah :p
Cleaning the fuel system & carb and installing a fresh inline filter would be a good start, you could just have a piece of crap stuck in a passage. Getting rid of the vacuum leaks & such needs to be done before any serious carb tuning
Did I mention quit pi$$ing off your fine truck with that bellybutton cheapo sbChebbie..

    they look so ugly tho.
I could not sleep til i went and took a peek inside the tank.
I saw a 7up botle cap in there and i suspect it got "soft"with the gas.this has been giving me problems since about 6 months ago.
He took my cap once and left it on the running board,it felt and someone ran it over.:mad::mad:
