For all you motor "GURUS" out there.......... What is the ADVANTAGE or DISADVANTAGE of building a motor with a SMALLER bore and shorter stroke?? I inherited this motor with my project. It has a 1960 283CI block with 1968 327CI heads; intake manifold & Quadrajet carburetor. The builder, supposedly, owned a machine shop. I don't know if it was purposely done or just had left over parts lying around. It will be some time yet before I fire it up for the first time. CAN'T WAIT TO HEAR IT RUN! "remember, there is NO such thing as a stupid question?" Learning something everyday and the HAMB is the GREATEST! Thanks again, LG, Mike
A motor with a short stroke can make higher revs but that's not all that needs done. The cam, lifters and springs etc. need to be built for it also. For your engine it's probably just for more cubes. I know there's some things on 283's that need to be done in order to make it a good performance motor. I wanna say the cam oil groves and some other stuff like that need modified. There was an article in HRD a while back where they build a hot 283
Hey there VSO737, you do realise this is the Introductions Page, don't you? I see you have 176 posts to your name, so you're obviously not that new that you need to be told to introduce yourself here (I assume you have already done that before). You may want to start your thread again over on the Message Board. As for your question, a shorter stroke will allow higher revs compared to a longer stroke motor, but will be lower on torque. Apart from that, the 283 was a great motor in its day, and helped establish the SBC as one of the greatest motors of all time. A good one is well worth having, so don't underestimate it. Cheers.
Sorry about that....................and it is NOT the first time either. NO wonder I could NOT find it on the proper board. "It's hell getting old"................ Thanks, Mike
Hey, no need to be sorry, it's not the end of the world. As you have already noted, you will struggle to get many replies by hiding your thread on the intros page. I understand your comment about it being hell getting old - but don't worry about that, it's much better getting old than not - IMO anyway. Hope I was able to help a bit. Cheers.
