It looks like the po had clearance problems and solved it with some cutting and brazing. I haven't found a replacement canister on line so do I just buy an adapter and use a spin on filter. Is there a better adapter to buy. Thanks in advance Phil
Does that one leak? I still run the canister filter, only one place for it to leak, the spin on adapters have two.
I haven't a run the engine since I've owned it, but I don't see any sign of a leak, but it's not very attractive. Phil
Basically, there are two variations of the spin on oil filter adapters. One uses a Ford filter, that has a built in release valve in the filter, and I believe those filters are only one length. Not that the length should make any difference to you as opposed the PO. The other filter adapter uses Chevrolet filters, and there are at least three different oil filter lengths, and needs a release valve in the adapter as there is't one in the oil filters themselves. I'm curious what the PO did for an actual filter with the cutdown cannister? The bolt must have been cutdown also. Why not just buy another cannister? Hot rodders can be a creative bunch. Go spin on.I put a canister on my 32 PU,and all it did was make me not want to change the oil.To do it right you need to remove the adaptor plate, and replace the large o ring the can seals against each time.On a lowered car,and not having a car lift it just sucked.I put a spin on kit on it,and now I can change the filter from the top. Most large filter companies still list the kit in the back of their catalog.Theres a Chevy 2 qt truck filter that spins right on if you have room.
I have a canister and adaptor if you want to pay for shipping. But you are better off with a one-piece cartridge adaptor [perma -cool 1134] https://www.summitracing.com/parts/prm-1134 The 2 piece adapters still use the old adapter and can leak. whereas the perma-cool doesn't leak. The perma-cool is full flow so it pays to use a bypass filter. I use a Fram HP4 but there are others out there [for all the Fram haters] eg : Baldwin B279 or Purolator L35132
I haven't opened it up to see what kind of element that they used. I will see if it looks suitable and if I paint the canister 1 color it would do until I find a stock unit to replace it. It would be easy enough to change even when installed. Phil
From Wix site using the 51515 as standard it list 5 that are larger and 33 that are smaller in that family. I used a Ford style adapter on a SBC because I could find more can sizes when putting a 327 in a Isuzu pickup. I'm sure some will correct me if I'm wrong but I don't remember the can having a taper why not just it to length?
here is one in the classifieds https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/early-chevy-oil-filter-canister.1162418/
Any of the Mopar 318 type engines used a short filter that will replace a ford type filter. Fram number was PH16 for the shorty
If I recall correctly I used this adapter on my 283, been working fine ever since for about 5 years or longer, 2 oil filter changes per year, no leaks. https://www.holley.com/products/accessories/dipsticks_and_oil_accessories/parts/1270
I changed many of those filters when I worked at the Chevy dealer and we never had to remove the adapter. It left a gap between itself and the block that formed a channel for the large O ring. You just took a screwdriver or pick and popped out the old O ring and stuck the new one in in its place.
