Okey, i ran into a little bit of issue with my new engine vs car. I dont have enough ground clearance with the pan i have now. ...and i have the 1980-85 block (RH dip stick) How much oil capacity am i looking for as a minimum? What kind of pan can i use without doing any modifications to it? I dont seem to find a suitable pan anywhere. I need something like 7.5" maximum depth. I wanted to buy an Milodon 31145 until i found out it was for LH DS. Its an alcohol injected SBC...and Im not going to run drysump. What did racers use back in THE days? (before my engine block was even invented..). Im starting to get nervous about finishing this thing as the season is close to start..
I have a 7qt milodon pan on mine that is really too big . . . its the dragster pan with gradual taper from front to rear so while it probably does great on oil control, I would rather have had more dump on the motor. Because I have a shorty glide over a direct drive/clutch can ***embly, the motor is already set out pretty far. IIRC, I'm at -2* on the intake where -7/-8* looked a ton better but then the pan would have been well under the frame rail without modification. I'm sure "back in the day" the guys were running cut up and modified stock pans . . . probably have to find an old-timer on here for that.
I had the same problem. You can get short pans. I ended up using a gated 7 quart Canton road race pan. 7" deep. About $300 though, but worked perfect.
It is pretty easy to take a stock pan and modify it to fit. I have done this for an altered we ran. I took the stock pan and cut it a couple of inches above the pan rail and and grafted on a rectangular box out of I built out of 18 gauge steel. If you have a bead roller, bead the bottom for strength. I made the front 3/4" shorter than the rear to encourage the oil to stay at the rear. Be sure to adjust your pickup so it is 1/4 off the bottom of the pan.
Milodon #31147 is a rt side dipstick, you cant go any shallower in the back because of the oil pump and pick-up clearence
Use a Corvette oil pan they are actually shorter then stock and 80-85 rh has a windage try. This is what most did back in the day with the 327s
I ran cars with plenty of ground clearance but when we first built Donny's Pro Stock Camaro in the '70s he had no sponsors so that required being creative a little bit. We used a stock pan and I widened it out at the bottom for extra capacity. I am sure that I am not the first person to do that.
