We are trying to put a 350 in a small frame of unknown origin. The frame has a power steering box mounted in front the front axle. The frame was designed for an inline six. The V8 fits well in the space, but the power steering pump on the engine is in direct conflict with the steering box. This build is for my father, and we are not wanting to give up power steering.

Does anyone know of an aftermarket or OEM application for mounting the power steering pump on the p***enger's side of the vehicle rather than the drivers side? Making custom lines is not a problem. We only need to run power steering and an alternator.

    Thanks

Chevy put the power steering pump on the back of the generator in the mid-late 50s. Since this forum is about building traditional cars, that seems to me to be the best way to solve your problem.

How about a long water pump w/alternator on the right. Then use lower 2 bolt holes on the front of the block along with the left side water pump bolts and a brace back to a motor mount bolt for bracing to make a mount to raise the P/S pump.

So your saying it’s right hand drive?

This could possibly be an option, but the alternator is mounted on the p***enger side as well.

The only way the power steering pump will fit on the driver side is if it is at the same height as the cylinder head. It will be enclosed by a hood and side panels, so looking funky isn't a huge problem. I am just out of my element. I normally play with 60's and up stuff.

No it is left hand drive. It just has no room to mount the power steering pump on the left side due to the size and location of the steering box. We are not sure what the box is out of. It is a large unit that reminds me of something from an early 60's Ford car.

The car needs to be as reliable as possible as it is being built to do a route 66 road trip. My father is almost 70 so the power steering would be nice if we can figure out how to make it work.

Chevy mounted the generator, then the alternator, on the driver side until the late 60s. Then they started using a longer water pump, and the alternator fit in front of the p*** side head, so it is closer to the water pump. We can't see your engine, so we can only guess at what you're doing...

it helps a LOT to post pictures of what you're working on. Then we can offer useful advice. Since you don't seem to know all the permutations of Chevy V8 engine accessories, you might not realize that there were different ways that Chevy made them.

Unfortunately, I spent 3 1/2 hours working on putting the motor and trans in with him today and I am now back home and not able to get pictures until the next time I am at his place. I don't have a smart phone so I will have to find a camera.

    I don't know everything about anything. That's why I asked :)

You sir, get a heart felt thank you. I literally searched Summit for an hour with my dad and we never came across that bracket. That will hopefully work. He will be very relieved.

  12. Check out the mounts made by Allen Grove. They might be able to be mounted on the p***enger side.
    Good Luck!

I typed “p***enger side power steering pump” (not Summit Racing) then scrolled and this was the closest thing that fit your request.

    Hope it meets your needs.

You guys are awesome! My old man will be really relieved to know he has some options.

I thought this would be something that hot rodders ran into pretty often. Looks like I should have been looking at dirt track racing parts.

Beware that getting something like that to work on your application may be a bit harder than just buying the part and bolting it on...racing setups might have the pulleys in a different location than you have. And might be designed for a different style pump. But it's a start!

The engine and trans going in his car, I pulled out of a 92 Chevy pickup. It was a low mile reman. It had a serpentine set up on it that we are ditching. I am going to look and see if we can get an entire accessory drive kit from one of these companies. All we need is alternator and power steering. Hopefully they have a kit, but even if not like you said, it's at least a good start.

There's been mention of the short and long water pump used on Chevy V8s. If you don't have anything yet, take your time to figure out what you want before you start buying parts. With the early design short water pump, the generator or alternator was on the driver side, and used a flat lower pulley that put the water pump/fan/gen belt right up against the crank hub. The power steering pump (in the 60s) used a deep lower pulley that put the PS belt as the third belt out (A/C was between the other two, if used). The later long pump design used a deeper pulley, and the fan/alt belt was furthest out, with the power steering behind it, and AC behind that.

It can be pretty confusing, if you weren't working on these cars all the time back then.

  21. Here's a picture of a bracket I made to mount the Saginaw/GM pump up high on the driver's side IMGP2745.JPG 351W head in my 47 coupe. You could do something similar for the engine you're using.

serpentine set usually means reverse rotation water pump.

Yes, we went with a small block Chevy because of the ease of getting parts on the road. I was always under the ***umption that they were super simple. This has opened my eyes. I have a 20+ fleet of old stuff ranging from 2 '41 Chevy Sedans up to a '68 Cougar. Aside from the 327 in my 66 Chevy truck and the 350 in my 91 Chevy truck, I don't have much experience with the small block Chevy.

You are correct and we have already pulled the water pump. It was going to be replaced regardless.

That is a lot of options. If they asked me what color of interior my car had to know what pump it used, they might be as bad as my old Fords. Ha.

Custom making a bracket is my go-to. My dad wants something that has already been tried and proven. I wont get into details, but he is at a point in his life where he doesn't have a lot of time and has enough money. That being said, you probably built that bracket in less time than I spent researching so.....

Oh well. Just trying to help him out and keep him happy.

  28. Will a bracket that raises up the pump help?

It would have to raise it about as high as the cylinder head, but yes that is an option as well.

  30. Here is a mid height mount
    IMG_6241.jpeg
Moroso makes a bracket that’s mounted directly in front of the head.
Uses the newer style small gm pump

or could you modify/re-engineer and flip brackets like this to the other side
