I just installed a mid 80's GM pickup steering box in my 1960 Chevy half ton. When I got the box from the local pick a part I probably should have grabbed the pump also but I had several good ones in the garage so I didn't. Now comes the problem around 1980 GM went to metric hoses with o-ring ends. My question is can I pull the fitting from the later pump and put it in my old pump replacing the reverse flare that is in it or do I need to go get another pump? Or is there an adapter to use an old style hose on the new box or new style hose on the old pump? Thanks Fred
I have done this fix a couple of times-I have spliced the end that fits the pump to a hose that fit in length, but didn't have the right end for the pump-just cut the metal tubing and used a 3/8" (or whatever size) compression fitting to join the two metal lines.
I think you can change the pump fitting to the one you have and see how it does. They are all made by the same company, so go 4 it. You can also modify the valve inside the pump to lower the pressure. I used the gm valve in a late ford pump and added shims to change the pressure and it works great. Need help, PM me.
I have changed the fitting before, but if I remember corectly there may have been issues with the pressure. It's been 12 or 13 years so... I don't think it was a problem though.
Thanks guys. FYI NAPA does have adapters to go from the male to female inverted flare but not to the o ring type. Fred
