When I try to get a witness mark on the valve tip by using a magic marker, the rocker is so loose on the ball (Comp's Magnum 1.52 roller tip rockers) that I immediately have too wide a witness mark when I drop the
rocker down on the stud. It's in the middle of the valve tip, but the valve has never been tightened down or moved to 1/2 lift.

The magic marker rubs off almost as soon as the trunion touches it. It doesn't seem there's any other way to do it........is there?

    Thanks in advance.

I use a weak spring and adjust the rocker to "0" and just eyeball the tip of the rocker or in your case roller to see where it is. If it's pretty much in the middle of the valve stem I'm a happy guy.

  3. You have to use a solid lifter for mock up. The plunger on a hydralic lifter will keep depressing and give you a false reading. Put a solid lifter in even if it's a hydralic cam to run the length check, set the valve lash to zero, run the valve open to half of the cam lift, roller should be in the middle of the valve tip. Adjust push-rod length as required. Push-rod can be about .050 longer to compensate for hydralic lifter pre-load. Just remember to remove the solid lifter if you have a hydralic cam !!

  4. Yeah, what Engine Pro 5X said ! Do something drastic such as Spray paint the top of that solid lifter red, before you drop it in for the testing, and measurement. That way, you will remember to remove that solid lifter off the hydraulic cam. And remember that Hillsboro, Kansas pork sausage rules!
