    Hey Fellas,

Sorry if this has been covered before.

What would suggest/recommend as good reading material for SBC rebuilding? I was looking around and there are so many choices in books. I'm sure they share the same basic information but i'd like to know what you'd recommend from personal experience.

    thanks,

    Bones

Visit a bookstore or library and spend some time reading, see how you like different books.

I learned from a series of articles in Hot Rod in 1974 or 75 that were published shortly before I tackled my first 283...at age 14....there was a lot missing that I learned later from further reading and experience.

the old HP books are pretty good. Kind of outdated for mainstream folks, but getting to be almost traditional.

I like looking for pics of Denny Wycoff (sp?) and Dave Pressler in them :)

  5. For performance stuff there is none better than "The Chevrolet Racing Engine" by Grumpy Jenkins. I believe it may be out of print now and a little hard to find but well worth looking for.

  6. X2 on this book , it covers a lot of little details that most books don't. if you read this book and cannot rebuild your SBC there is no hope for you

How's it goin, Ray! she's comin along just fine... thanks to you and getting her over here from Iowa.

i'm gonna slap a 350 in there but i have this thing in my brain that i have to modify the powerplant somehow or else... its not really my powerplant... so i'm getting rid of the stock heads and induction and the cam... and then i might as well rebuild the whole thing.

So David Vizard and Grumpy Jenkins... roger that.

    thanks guys!

  10. David Vizards books are published by S-A design if that helps. Another good one is "How to hotrod smallblock Chevrolets" by Bill Fisher & Bob Waar. Published by HP Books. Keep in mind these are all pretty much old school technology so they aren't gonna help much for guys building LS series engines & that type of thing. They are more for traditional smallblock Chevys made in the 80s and older.

I used the 'how to rebuild small blocks' book as a reference guide when I was teaching engine rebuilding. It is good solid no nonsense information that should be in the personal library of anyone starting out working on the Small block Chevs.
I couldn't even begin to count how many engine building books I have and each one of them has it's own merits.

For stock rebuilds, Vizard's book is the one to get.
