As many as it needs to turn the engine? 400-500 cranking amps is more than enough for a stock engine in warm weather, I guess I don't understand your request?
As a general rule of thumb a 4 or 6 cylinder starter should not draw more than 250 amps., a small to mid sized 8 cylinder no more than 300 amps., and a big inch engine no more than 350 amps. Of course these are generic figures, but usually any starter drawing much more is on the road to failure.
