Seems all I ever see anymore is SBC crap? Do I jump the SBC adapter to WTF band wagon, or pay a premium(new parts) for creativity and individuality? I know this is kind of a retarded post, but, is anydody out there aware there are other(better performance & looks) motors than SBC? Soooo many......Yaaaaaawnnn Sorry in advance, Graham
there were these two hobo's talking. one said he was the luckiest hobo ever. said he found twenty dollars and had stayed drunk for two days. the other hobo said he was the luckiest hobo ever. he said he was walking down the railroad tracks and found a naked woman tied there. he said he carried her up to the woods and had sex with her for two days. the other hobo said did you get a blow job? he said nope. i couldn't find her head.
might as well put your helmet on now because they'll come after you now. dollar for dollar there has never been a better all around motor than a small block chev, back in the 60's I tryed to compete against them with Y-Block fords, even had a 57 F-series factory supercharged 312. then I put a 360 horse 327 chev in a 56 ford and never looked back. I'm an "Old Motor Whorder" got em every where. I have Hemi's all sizes. Chev's from 265-350. Lincoln's Buicks, Ford's. I like them all but with all those Cheap small block parts out there. if wanted to go fast and hold up I'd build the chev. but not just a crate motor (not that anythings wrong with that)
I say build what you you have around or how much $ you got in your pocket usually decides REAL FAST what motor your gonna put in....
amen i love y-blocks great motor i,ve put many miles on it but for the feel of power with a few $$$ it,s bow tie all the way
I've always been a Chevy guy but in the 70s I wrenched on a Ford latemodel Sportsman oval track car with a Boss 302 engine. Talk about a kickass engine, I was really impressed with the power and durability of that engine and always wondered why Ford didn't promote it more and make it more available. Hi-po factory Chevy parts have always been easy to come by, but even back then the factory Boss 302 parts seemed scarce and overly expensive.
Dollar for dollar they are hard to beat. Just use one until you can afford something else that you really want.....jmho
Wow! I expected to get my head split! Just got home and checked the reaction to my rant. You guy's are'nt so tuff! Ha-ha J/k..... I'm just burnt on them I guess, had a few of'em. Not a bad motor for sure. Just kinda like Nova & ass-holes, every ones got one... Not that I'm doing something pioneering, but I'm building a gasser inspired 61 f100 unidody, powered by a Built Mercury P.I. 390 FE. And it seems like great scores that fit the build are few and far between. Sometimes I feel like trading it for a "Camero". Eeeewww??
I agree and I am also guilty I have several SBC from 327's to 350's. But I get sick of seeing them in everything you look at. They run good and are easy and cheap. However I have been thinking about pulling the 327 out of my Nova and putting a Non-Chevy motor something like a Chrysler or other such thing. I feel the same way about Edlebrock good stuff but man it's everywhere very common, .....not that there is anything wrong with that.
i,m so tired of everyone wanting to put a hemi in every thing they gotten more boreing then sbc,s or flatheads use a motor that you like and afford not what the fad motor is in right now
Any motor can be built reasonable with a little scrounging for deals, the machine work is the same but is just a little different when it comes to parts,if I ever kill the 235 in my 37 chevy p/u it will never get a sbc or bbc no matter how cheap it is to build them. I will spend more to be different. Jeff
Yeah, you're right, small block chevys are stupid and lame. Guess i'll throw all this shit in the dumpster on Monday. Whatever, if you don't like 'em, don't build one... what's the problem?
I'm workin on a F100 gasser as well! Mine's a 63 fleetside longbed though. Yeah, parts for Ford are hard to come by. I'm going with a 460 ex police engine in mine bored 30 over with balanced rotating assembly, the rest is stock for the most part. Man, I can't wait to drive it that old 460 stands up and BARKS comin off idle.
Guess it all depends. I bleed chevy engine orange, but still can't believe the guys who use chevys in non-chevy cruisers and kustoms. Seems like bastardizing the car's DNA when a stock rebuilt (correct-make) V8 is up to the task and probably cost competitive given the low-performance situation. But a true hot rod, an actual performance car, is a whole nother story. Not hard to justify the chevy when you're talking dollars to power & weight, and running it so hard that it could pop tomorrow. You can pop 2 chevys for the cost of rebuilding anything else, and good luck finding a machinist who knows an engine that's been out of production since 1960 Thanks to the 5.0 guys, the SBF aftermarket is closing fast. But has evolved to favor later model components. Not very HAMBy, but soon the ford guys won't have cost or convience as motivators to run a chevy. On the right, 406 chevy, the "second hand parts special". Put together based on the same observation that started this thread, parts and deals are EVERYWHERE. $1500 wingnut to drain plug, it's a tire shredding animal. On the left, a 392 hemi that's worth a grand as it sits, needing a +$4000 rebuild to match the chevy's performance. This picture is like that famous optical illusion, the engine you choose depends if you see the old hag, or the young lady.
I have an early 50s fridge in my kitchen. Love it. Have used it for years. But the past year of living with my girlfriend, and us actually cooking and having food in the fridge (which I never bothered to procure while living alone) has made me realize that its rather cramped in there. Altho I love the looks, the modern fridge in our basement used for backup storage is sure looking appealing. So, todays goal is to switch the two so that the modern one is upstairs and the vintage one in the basement. My point? People choose it because it works. You cant beat a proven track record spanning 5 decades.
I still love them, I know they are everywhere. But hell so are 5-spokes, red paint, Ford steelies, Rally wheels, etc. They are all still here 'cause they are bitchin' Here is my latest SBC that is running, next is the 6-71 monster I have wanted my whole life. For the blown one it just came back from the machine shop and is going together in my shop. Man I can't wait!
I gonna agree with everyone else here. I'm rebuilding my 63 f100 with a 352 FE out of a 66 f100. Just the parts and heads redone is costing me around $2000. I'll be lucky to get 275 to 300 horses. I picked up a running sbc for my 51 poncho rv cam edelbrock manifold and carb 4 bolt mains around 300 horses, for $500 bucks. Just needs to be resealed. You can't beat a SBC for the money. If money is not an object, well build what ever you want...
Baragins come in all makes and brands, really. I just bought a complete, running 390 FE four barrel engine from a 68 F100 for $100. It's factory rated at 315hp in stock form, and this one came with freshly rebuilt 1966 390 heads, a 1964 T-bird intake and a new timing chain and gears. No oil leaks and it ran perfect! Can you buy a running 350 Chevy for a $100 with fresh heads, four barrel intake and carb, a new timing set and a factory rating of at least 315hp??? Probably a 307 or 305...but 350 Chevys aren't as cheap as some would lead you to believe! That said, however...carefull shopping coupled with a dash of luck will uncover a bargain on just about any brand of motor you'd like to mess with! Shop around!
Let me know where all those cheap 200$ SBC´s are. I´ll come and get all of them. Over here if you´re lucky 200 Euros will get you a bare 4" block that needs an overbore. I bought a well worn 307 longblock for 600 Euros, needed a new cam and bearings. Cheap was yesterday, at least around here... Chris
Bitch, bitch, bitch-talk about what you like, not what you don't. And don't gripe about "having" to use a more expensive engine. If you want it bad enough, you'll pony up like the others do. There are a lot of reasons there are SBC's in most everything, and a lot of reasons we use the other motors. I got a nailhead, a y-block, a straight 8 and 6 in my cars. I don't cuss the ones I don't have, I just like the ones I do.
Noname, noname is right about SBC's. You can run a SBC to hell and back and it'll still start and run like hell the next day. Simply put the SBC is by far the best engine ever made and over time it's proved it. I never get tired of looking at great engines especially the SBC. Cruiser
Uhhh? Not really a problem, more of an observation. Please, buy them all... And don't throw them away, that would be silly, recycle them for $ One could make alot of beer cans out of that manifold
Thanks Coop- Here's what it's in. Fresh paint only a week old. I drove it around like this anyways. I couldn't help it. Tim
