I'm needing to know which way to go for heads on my 327 (331). What I have is this: Isky .630/.600 lift roller cam Hilborn stack injection 4 valve relief pistons (.030 over) Vertex magneto Plan on using an auto tranny (powerglide more than likely) to back it up in a light tube-framed 'altered style race car. The question is what heads to run? I have serveral options. I can rebuild a set of '70 vintage 2.02 heads with the stuff I have around the garage (7/16 studs, K-motion triple springs, guide plates) or a set of World heads (170cc intake, 2.02/1.60, 67cc chambers) or just order a new set of heads from Summit's catalogue. I am needing some real-life expert advice on what to go for. r
Cheapest and best HP? Order some 200cc Iron Eagle platinums setup for a roller cam with the small chamber. I think you can get them as small as 49cc with the larger intake port heads. The smaller heads have 64cc chambers IIRC. Run light flat tops, and good rods and spin it. Machine work and parts will put you at the same price as the Iron eagles on the other castings.
Suggestion above is a good one. Get the smallest chamber you can to get the compression up; Your cam and fuel injection will love you for it.
I would be real careful with the valve lift. Your talking racing cam and street replacement pistons. Valve clearance issues could result>>>>.
The 2 heads you listed are way too small for a 600 lift cam IMO. Look at racing heads in the +200cc range or drop your cam down. Or both. Good luck
With that much Cam you are going to need something huge. Look at Brodix. No stock head is going to be able to support that much cam, so just forget it.
OK. Then what am I to look for? I like the idea of running Brodix heads, but which version? The real question is, what stats am I to look for in a head that will support my cam, cid, etc.? I see Jegs has an aluminum 'Jegs' head that has some impressive stats... r
I have a set of CNC'd Brodix Track 1's (milled to 64cc) on a 406 SBC, 11.6:1, and a .630/.630 solid roller. I'm shifting at about 7400 rpm. On my 406, I actually wish I'd gone with a little bit bigger head; on your 331, I bet they'd SCREAM.
You need to spend 10 minutes on the phone with each head manufacturer. Then once you know enough to think hard about your combination, write down answers to the questions they were asking. Now call back and spend another 15 minutes with each. You should now know what size heads to be looking for. And oh yeah, when they ask the parts, be real. Don't buy heads for an engine you want. Buy heads for the engine you have.
don't forget RHS heads - do a search on ebay - they will set your heads up with roller springs for your cam. AFRs would be a good choice too. Also look at the edelbrock victor 23 degree heads - they say 530-580 HP out of the box. MMMMMMM
How much do you want to spend on heads is a better question. If you are willing to spend the $$ on a new set of heads from summit, you could pick up a new set of aluminum ones and be further ahead. We are a dealer for DART and can usually meet or beat Summit. We can also port your older heads. You need to make sure you don't get too big of a head due to the smaller displacement. LOTS of velocity will make big power and keep that Hilborn tuned up. Sounds like a COOL project. Got any pics? Mike
That's a tough one dude. Big cam makes me think 200 or 220 intake runners. Displacement makes me think 180ish. Those pistons are going to need some small chambers to make any compression, but be careful how far you go on stock replacements. If the World heads have springs that can handle that cam, I'd say bolt them on and try it out before you spend the dough on a new set of heads. Whatever specs you end up looking for, be sure to compare RHS. They are the smoothest out of box iron heads I have ever felt and have sizes, spring options for everything.
I'm thinking that I will need to spend around $1400-1500 to get wherre I need. I will be replacing the pistons for high compression ones, too. I'm just looking for a path through the forest of heads that are offered... Oh and this will be a drag car...not a street car. r
