355 ci. i have the gauge in the car (aftermarket gauge trio) connected to the head. it is showing 220 degrees. i installed another one in the intake it shows 195 degrees. these temps are at the same time while engine is idling. which one do i beleive? dosen't show any signs of overheating.
The head will always read hotter than the intake. A SBC loves a little heat I.E.---200-220 degrees in the head
I think the intake is the most realistic reading--as others have said, there is a 30 degree difference in most cases--also some gauges are very inaccurate-can correct witha resistor if gauge is electric-I think the ones in the head may? pick up some residual heat from the proximity to the exhaust
Have you tried switching the guages to see if its really that much different between head and intake?
I have had sending units in both the heads and the intake. All three were wired to a rotary switch so I could check each one ... After the SBC had warmed up to operating temperature ... The intake sending unit always read 20 or so degrees cooler. One of the heads always read about 10 degrees warmer than the other head but I forget which one ran the coolest and which one was the warmest. I believe the right side head ran the warmest but I am not positive.
