The Mercury PP was used because it bolted up to the Chevrolet flywheel. The only flywheel Chevy made back then. So you were forced to use the 3 bolt starter motor to turn it over....the only starter motor they made back then.

Sure you can redrill a newer flywheel to take the Mercury clutch and use the modern bolt to the block starter motor to turn over the modern flywheel. The throwout bearing is determined by the clutch fingers. Sounds like a lot of trouble to me when the old parts are not that hard to find. Why complicate it when it was all worked out before you were born.:D

My roadster uses an 8BA min. bell with a home brewed aluminum plate as an adapter. I have no idea what clutch it uses or the throwout bearing or the flywheel.

    Thanks Tommy and Koz.

I'll be getting the adapter and I already have a Ford PP and 10" clutch disk. I will also need the pilot bushing from Speedway.
I can adapt this to either of my two of my current projects and I need to decide which one. I'm thinking now it will be to my '29 Roadster as it has a rebuilt 78 open drive case with a rebuilt '39 banjo converted to open drive.

Here's a pic of my old '31 that I ran this setup in with a '40 rear and a shortened, closed '48 driveshaft and torque tube.

    That Roadster looks great, Koz.

Thanks for the pic of the P/G adapter - I'd never seen one before. As not every other car over here runs an SBC, all that I'd ever seen or dragged out of a scrapyard had aluminium P/G, TH350 or manual boxes. And in 30 years since my first Chevy, the 3-bolt starter in that set I bought was the first one of those I'd ever seen :)

I felt the same way when I was playing with Jags. I learned a lot with the '66 E type FHC I owned for a few years and even more with my XJC. Give me a shout if there's anything else I might help with on this side of the pond.

    Ok
    To update on this thread.

Here some parts I'm looking at to do this job.

The SBC 168t aluminium flywheel is from Speedway but states:
Note: Not for use with stock clutch disc as springs on friction disc hub will not clear flywheel bolts.

The Speedway Ford FH 10.5" 1 3/8" 10 spline disc s/b be Ok with this flywwheel?
The flywheel will need to be drilled for the Speedway Ford FH PP.

Well, I have the engine/Cragar trans adapter and Hurst mount all mocked up with the rail mounts in. Sure is a nice fit so far.

    Question:
Just for giggles....I put the chatter rods through the inside holes and it sure looks like it oughta just bolt right up to each of the side bolt holes over from top on that Cragar adapter! Yes.....no?
