I like the HEI, I raced one for years in a dirt car, they work well. They even look good on '70's and up muscle cars. BUT, to me they look out of place with the tri-power setup. If you dont want points there are other options to run electronic with the small cap and it looks better IMHO.
I seem to remember there is a way to use a 90's Ford ignition module and any points type distributor. The points are the trigger to make the module work. I also seem to remember doing the same thing with a Mopar module from the 70's. Here is a link to show what I am talking about. http://advrider.com/index.php?threads/points-to-electronic-ignition-cheap-easy.417099/
I thought the only limitation was the hole diameter on the manifold. I think you just need to make the hole bigger. I also thought you can convert points distros to HEI. I could definitely be wrong on both points.
You don't have to have a big honkin distributor to run electronic. Sometimes when we change on little thing we have to change several other little things to make it work.
I ran an Offy 3 2 manifold on my OT El Camino, I machines the back of the intake on the mill for clearance, worked fine if you just have to run a large HEI.
DUI = Davis Unified Ignition Nothing wrong with points and a condenser in a street motor. I am a big fan of Pertronix if you feel the need for electronic ignition. At least it looks right, no need for the ugly *** HEI coil or big MSD box.
There used to be a guy who built small body HEI's , Dave's small body HEI's but I think he may be out of business now. A small cap GM distributor from Pertronix is probably the best way to go.
Damned Unfriendly Ignoramus. I don't recall what the letters stand for but it is a good ignition as aftermarket ignition goes. pretty near bullet proof.
Still in business as far as I know --> http://www.davessmallbodyheis.com/ What makes you think he is out of business? I have one on my OT Impala SS on a 327 right now and it works great.
I was unable to get to his website for some reason and there was some talk on another forum that they were having trouble contacting him and that he had some health issues. Other than that I have no idea.
check out Bubba on here, he is a distributor master of masters and has a damn good "speedster" hot sauce as well.
I see some on evilBay, no idea how good they are though. I was looking at this one earlier. It looks like one in post #5. http://www.ebay.com/itm/190867648365?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT
You can either bore out the hole in the intake manifold so that the larger HEI distributor shaft will fit through or there was someone who was converting points distributors to HEI. Seems like others on this thread also mentioned these options.
A number of V8 GM pickups used a small HEI with the module on the firewall--this may be an alternative.
