289 with an AOD in a 40 Ford. The engine has 1970 351W heads with 60cc chambers, .030 flat top 4 relief forged pistons, A dual plane Edelbrock intake, 289hipo exhaust manifolds, carb, ignition and final gear ratio to be determined. The car doesn't need to be a drag racer but, it does need to be fun to drive. Mid range power for road tripping is more important than off the line accelleration. What do ya got?
You'll be between about 9.0 - 9.5:1 compression I'm guesstimating, assuming a zero deck and a standard .040 or so head gasket. I'd say something with a split duration, say 215-225 @ .050 lift on the intake, 220-230 @ .050 lift exhaust, as much lift as you can find, and 110 lobe centers. Use a converter with no less than a 2000rpm stall, gear it to run around 2400 down the road. Will be a torquey bastard with a fun idle will probably give you decent economy. Use a 600cfm vac sec carb.
