Hi guys. I have a 78' [for now] 302 for my truck. I want to put in a AOD trans. but are there issues with the balance? Which ring gear should I use? Thanks for any help as always. Peter

Screw it together with the flywheel that fits the trans. It will work fine

I think you have to match the balancer to the flywheel. You can't mix an AOD (newer)flywheel with a '78 balancer - sometime around '82, they switched to a 50oz-weighted balancer and that has to match the flywheel otherwise you'll have a horrible vibration. If you poke around a Mustang forum, I'm sure you'll find all the info you need to complete the swap.

EDIT: Here, I found some info I had that is very complete:

I did this swap on an earlier 289. An issue arises first with the number of teeth on the driveplate (flywheel).......the early ones are 157 tooth and 28 ounce imbalance. The driveplate used with AOD's, at least in my case was 164 tooth. The stock AOD flywheel (164 tooth) was also 50 ounce imbalance. My solution was to buy (from Summit) a 164 tooth, 28 ounce driveplate AND the correct 'seperator plate' that goes between the trans case and block. It is needed because the starter opening is in a different location on 164 tooth flywheel/tranny cases.
