I'm getting back into model building. Last time I built one was about 25 years ago and have forgot a lot. I want to paint some of the model parts that are "chromed", black. This is for a race car model. Do I need to remove the "chrome" ,or just use a good spray paint to cover up the sliver? Thanks

If you want best results and want to remove the chrome. Try oven cleaner, but remember that oven cleaner is nasty so use proper safety equipment. Oven cleaner will strip any paint and chrome without harming the plastic.

Bleach or Castrol Super-Clean will also strip the chrome.

Cascade dishwashing liquid works well (undiluted) and isn't toxic.

Bleachwite for cleaning white wall tires is what you want. get it at any auto parts store. Pour it into a clean butter tub to just cover what ever part you put in there, and put the top on it. Let the part soak overnight and it's totally clean of any chrome. Rinse with warm water to clean it, and you're good to go. There's no smell, and you can reuse it over and over again.

Makes sense to me; I've never used it to remove chrome on plastic but regularly use "Westley's Bleche-Wite" in the same manner (overnight) to remove the 'release agents' used on resin bodies. Sounds like a good call Bomber.

    A man!!!... :)

These were chromed parts at one time... The valve covers were painted aluminum after I let them sit in CSC over night... Still need to paint the "parts pack" intake..

Just put your parts in a plastic tub with the lid on it and use tweezers or something to take the parts out and wash with warm water and an old tooth brush... Let dry and your ready to paint...

I to use Westleys Bleche White,as said earlier let them soak overnight and your good to go.I would also use a primer so you know your getting a good adhesion when you spray the top coat.

    Good question for the HAMB

  14. CSC, oven cleaner work well for me too. I find that after I strip the chrome, I still need to prime the parts first before the paint is laid on.

The Tamiya spray paints that I use will react with the under-plate that the solvents leave behind.

Here's what I've been using to de-chrome my model car parts... It's the same as Castrol Super-Clean.. Think I bought this at Kroger's a couple of years ago.. Around 7 bucks for a 1 gallon jug.. :)
I've seen this stuff desolve chrome plated parts in under 60 seconds..

I have always used Clorox bleach to remove the chrome. Then a rinse/wash in dish detergent, Dawn preferably, then let thoroughly dry. Paint with your favorite primer, etc.
    Always glad to help.
