We had a guy here sell 6 cars to a guy in Australia, the guy had a "representative" show up with the cash and ship the cars. I've had a shipper show up with the cash as well and take my car, he said he had a good relationship with the out of town buyer (a dealer) and does it all the time. My guess it was probably legit. Only when they want to send a check without asking anything about the car and or offer more then your'e asking I get the red flag.
Australian guys have to get their hands on as much old iron as they can. They use it to build their death-machines to try and rule the wasteland. Haven't you seen the movies?
I'm a Fraud Accountant. The usual scam is for them to send you a money order for more than the car is worth and tell you once it is cleared pay the extra to the shipper. It looks like it clears but you are out the money you gave the shipper and your wheels. Hard to scam with cash unless it is counterfeit. Look up the shipper and call the shipper direct.
Shipper looks legit too just google them...."When shipping cars in container from California you will be able to utilize some of the largest, most advanced ports in the nations. The port of Oakland, Los Angeles, Long Beach can all be used when shipping your car from the United States. Your cars will be loaded into a container and taken to the port of departure."
Thanks again guys, looks like I probably lost a legit sale by saying no. He hasnt got back in touch with me. Thats ok as I still like my car.
Hmm. Sounds like your problem was with a dishonest local shipper, not an overseas buyer, but I appreciate your skepticism. All kind of moot now, since the OP is keeping his car, for the moment, but may this all be good advice for us in the future.
I am sorry Sir, This is NOT correct. As a Transporter I have paid cash for a good number of vehicles. Many times for my good customers I have used my OWN money & let the customer pay me back when I delivered. However, I never tried to make extra money by working the seller into letting me have it for less. I guess because I am an HONEST transporter with morals, the thought never ocurred to me.
I had a local guy w a heavy kiwi accent call on my 29 ford pu.saying his mate back home wants the car.and shipper would have cash.shipper showed up w cash and bye bye 29 pickup
When I first joined the HAMB we sent a '53 Effie to Japan. We were handling the shipping on our end If I recall a HAMBer hauled the car to Florida to put in on a boat. I digress, sorry. The deal was that this medieval lookin' dude showed up to my friends house @ 10 PM with a stack of hundreds. I was asked to be there which was no problem, there was donuts. Strange deal happen, you need to be careful but strange deals happen. Don't trust the pen, look for the watermark. Dollar bills are getting washed these days and the pen shows them to be real.
On the local news this morning. A guy advertised his truck & trailer on C L. He & the buyer make a deal & agree to meet in a certain area. When they meet the buy, his wife & son are there & threaten him with his life to sign a bill of sale. They had a gun. He said no & one of the hit him on the head with a tire iron, he got up & they hit him again with a ball bat, he got up again & they choked him until he p***ed out & they took the truck & trailer. The sheriff caught them about a mile a or so down the road when the truck broke down. The three of them are in jail & the seller survived this ordeal. I didn't dream this up it was all over the news. C L sellers always be careful when meeting a buyer, use the local police parking lot or as close to a law enforcement station as you can.
