I had an almost verbatim solicitation from this same guy last week for a pair of "nice scuff plates". He was responding to HAMB "wanted posting" I placed. Used some of the exact sentences to prey on my sympathy, such as the back pain, confined to bed at home, wife works "with" FedeX, which I saw as a strange phraseology in his use of with instead of "for". I wanted to pay him through PAYPAL but he emailed a reply saying his PAYPAL account was dormant and I would need to send a MoneyGram in Sheila's name. He further stated he understood my concern but he was a God fearing old man over 65 and as ahard working man would never ripoff another hard working man. I looked up his HAMB profile and he had just join the day he first emailed me that solicitation. That was my first alert. He had no profile or history. So he is perusing the wanted list for susceptible people. So from now on, check out their profile, try to develop conversations on HAMB with their forum members. Anymore we can't be too careful. Anyway I said OK I'll send you a Money Gram, "just send me your address and phone number.
I google mapped his address, turns out to be at the end of a dead end street way out in the sticks NW of Austin and when after several calls to the phone number He'd sent: with only the standard computer "No one is available to take your call", I decided that if a confined to home person can't answer the phone the whole thing was a scam. I didn't send any money.
Now today I run across this thread. I am sorry that he got through to you and wanted to let everyone know this guy is con.
Best Regards, and good luck with all your endeavors, KB.
PS: I still need a pair of nice scuff plates for a 36 Ford 3W or Tudor.

I want to thank all that responded to my post. I was too naive, It was not a great amount of money. But I learned a good lesson. I have bought and sold items thru the Hamb and up to now all my experiences were positive. I hope others on hear will benefit from this post.

Sounds like a Brit. We don't use "shall", we use "will". My condolences for your loss.

My red flag on the OP's conversation was the word "kindly". I have never kindly asked anyone anything before. Sorry you got ripped off.

Wow. If the criteria for being British was to use "will" when we meant "shall", we'd all still have pictures of the Queen on our money. :)

Maybe it's time they stepped up the requirements. No photo ID, etc.?

My son had an early Shelby Prototype fastback Mustang for sale a while back. Had numerous calls to buy the car sight unseen, one for more money than asking. They would send a driver to pick up the car and you can keep the excess money ! Even promised a bank check. We knew it was a fraud from the get go. Strange as it seems the local bank fraud dept. told him there are numerous "bad" bank checks. He ended up selling it to a buyer from Europe that did an electronic cash transfer.
    Scammers suck!

Not necessarily a Brit. In most regions of the world, excluding the Americas, people learn to speak British english, even if it's a 2nd language. He could be anywhere. I'll bet he's not in Austin though.

  10. I hate to say it but no one gets much sympathy from me for back pain or any other pain for that matter. Number one rule in life being needy in any way shape or form does not make you honest, just needy. Does that make me a hard ass, I guess 60+ years of chronic pain hardens you.

I never buy anything from someone because they have a sob story, it is not why you purchase something. It is also no reason to make concessions for someone, if you are dealing with Mr. Jones, you are dealing with Mr. Jones not his woman or his neighbor or friend or uncle or you name it.

Got to laugh, the other day there was a thread asking the where abouts and well being of a HAMBer who is a quadriplegic. I purchased an oddball Cal Custom part from him one time. I wanted it and he didn't. I sent him a postal money order, not to his woman or his kid, but to him. He sent me the part. if he could handle his own business anyone can.

To me, the way you spelled "yall"' as "ya'al" would also be a red flag, LOL. Are you a real Floridian? Or just another Yankee moved South?
Hate to harp on the Alliance thing again, because almost always somebody comes back and accuses me of shilling for Ryan, or similar accusation. I've never even met Ryan, I just believe in paying my way, whatever I'm doing..
But when members join the Alliance there is a better chance that they are legit. And since when does a free membership in HAMB buy you an effort by Ryan to help straighten things out? There a helluva lot of people members here on HAMB and freebies for that many people? No way!
As much as it costs to build, or buy, a hot rod, $50 a year ain't shit.

OK I just wanted to say that. I do know Ryan and I like him real well and I will make a shameless plug for him and the HAMB every chance I get. The Alliance is a good deal, so don't follow my example, if you can swing it, and by that if you are willing to smoke one quarter ounce less or give up a few cocktails, do it. It won't keep you from being scammed, you are the only one that can do that, but it will keep this place alive and this is a damned good place, even if someone does get hustled once in a while.

several other forums I am on only allow you to reply in the classifieds after a certain time frame or so many legitimate posts were posted ( it was 50 ) , it kept all but the most die hard scammers out of it , if you really wanted the part and didn't have enough posts then you had to contact a admin and they would get info ( legal photo ID ) from you and the purchase could be made . but you were not allowed to post any sales till your criteria was met . it was a pain for the admin . but we never had any scammers .

Well ya'all are mostly right. I loaded up the truck and headed for south Florida after I retired from central Illinois. But another red flag is I live half way down a short dead end dirt road in the boonies. As for bein a Floridian I blend in with the other rednecks, Blue hairs, snow birds, and northerners who moved here like me 20 years or more ago.
In that 20 years I've only met a half dozen real cracker head Floridians. All the rest are from somewhere else. Most are decent hard workin and fairly honest people. Like my neighbor from Canada, the other from New York, and so on. We all get along and enjoy life so that's all that matters.
I do plan on moving back north to a small house we bought. The scary thing is getting rid of all my crap. I'm afraid to list it or use any of those pay things. The more I read the more I think about just digging a hole and burying everything. Maybe the guy in Austin will make me a deal I can't refuse. I shall sit here with my bad legs and sore back waiting.
Or I could reply to that nice old widow with 22 billion dollars who needs my SS number and Visa numbers to transfer the funds to my account so I can help needy children in Africa. I could use the five million she wants to give me for handling her account. I shall think about it ya'all.

My buddy had something or other for sale and the scammer done the ol check for more, keep the change thing... so my buddy goes out in his dog lot and scoops up a box full of fresh dog shit and sends to him.... LOL !!!

  18. You go check out, Scambaiters website.
It gives you a chance to bait these fuckers, and tie em up for a time, so while they are busy chasing their tails, they're not ripping someone else off.
I looked at it years ago, and have posted links to it over the years that I've been here, on other threads like this.
I just wish I had more free time to lead these sad people on, but I have real things to do, and I've wasted enough oxegen and megabites on these people already.
Sad part is, they are their own worse enemies, ripping people like this is damaging their souls, they will never feel the freedoms and inner peace that the majority of us enjoy.

It's "y'all" as a contraction of "You ALL."
Not ya'll or any other weird spelling.

Born, raised and spent my life in the south, y'all! :)

I agree on the "y'all" being a contraction of "you all", but I just type it as I speak it:"yall". Sort of like typing "pic" 'steada "picture". LOL :)

Any generic Religious reference can be a red flag also. I personaly am not very sanctimonious but it touches a nerve when some one uses Religion to scam. Same with preying on sick or lonely old people or widowers.
Scum of the earth and should treated as such.

  22. it has allways triped a red flag with me when a guy uses the HAMB classified to sell his stuff and that is his first post. Beweare the one post salesman. Would it be a good idea to not allow any classified posts untill you have 10, 20 or 50 posts? Would this just let good parts go to ebay?

  23. I have a small used car lot in Central Austin. I deal with online ads, wiring money, shipping cars, etc, for a living. Any time you hear the phrases "I shall", "kind sir", I'm interested in your "item" instead of 69 Camaro or 283 heads, or whatever, it's a scammer.

They will also say things like "Kindly send me your PayPal as I am in the military and cannot receive phone calls on base". They love to use the military as a cover.

Bottom line is if you can't talk to a live human on the phone and verify the name and address through Google, don't do it. A signed bill of sale and a copy of their DL also helps.

Don't ever send more money than you are willing to lose.

Ryan can't help on this one. These people don't exist.

Sorry for the disappointment but you got out light on this one.

  24. Speaking of language in general, I spent come time in Cajun country when I was wandering around the south and of all things I ended up helping painting a church. I was up painting an eve and I heard. "hay mistuh jewwhupkids?" I said,"Whaaaaat?" I guess the little guy thought that he needed to be closer for me to understand so up the ladder he comes. All at once I hear, "Unclam da laddah boy." so down he went and I followed because I still wanted to know what was being said. The older man explained to me that the chile was a settin on my bike and I toad him da yankee was a gonna whup him. So now I know that jewwhupkids translates to do you whip kids. :D

I had a good time on the south, probably as good a time as any place I have been on this earth. I did learn something in about '77 that I will always remember, the one place you never want to be if you're a long hair is Jackson Mississippi on a Saturday night. :D

yea I know that none of this has anything to do with being scammed but I just thought that maybe we should lighten up just a little bit.

This is a "double edged sword". While it's true that you can sometimes catch a tip on a possible scammer, you may be "throwing out the wheat with the chaff" Couple examples:
#1 I have a friend, younger than I, whom I have known for well over 50 yrs. He is a hot rodder of long standing, being a 2nd generation hot rodder at that. He is the type that likes, as a part of the hobby, to buy and sell cars and parts, helping to finance his personal projects, all of which incidentally, are for sale any time you ask! I really think he enjoys the buy/sell/swap more than all the rest of the hobby. He, however doesn't really care for spending a lot of time on HAMB, or anywhere else online. When time permits he does go to swap meets, to buy and sell.
He's been a member here on HAMB lots longer than I but has few posts except in classifieds, it just ain't his bag. Just because he isn't always over here like I am, I don't feel he should be disallowed posting on topic classified for sale ads. I and other friends have purchased from him and he's fair and honest.
#2-Another very recent example: From an ad posted in HAMB classifieds , I within the last few weeks purchased a really cherry, completed beautifully '40 Ford Deluxe Coupe at a big price, but still less than the equivalent car could be built, esspecially by me, as I'm 77.5 yrs. young and would not be physically able to do it all on another build.
I did my "due diligence", and did a lot of on HAMB searching before I ever called him, and found no posts other than other previous "for sale" ads. He told me a lot about both himself and the car, which had no pics available in the ad, and got his wife to email me pics of the car. He doesn't even post the ads, she does! He is sorta PC illiterate! Doesn't use one at all, never learned how! Has a "flip phone!"
Got enough info about him that I was able to do a free online check on him, and all his comments to me rang true, so arranged to fly up to Ohio and look at the car.
An hour underneath the '40 on his lift, a close interior and exterior visual examination after lowering it, and an extended drive, on surface streets and Xways and I knew I wanted it.
Ultimately I bought it, and got it home to GA last week, am still as happy as can be, and almost as proud of the '40 as I was of my son when he was born (and still am).
If your proposed rule on posting ads were in effect I wouldn't have that '40 today, as I wouldn't have known it even existed, much less that it was for sale..
Sorry for the novel, but I think such limits are bad, just use the incredible resources available to us here on HAMB and elsewhere on the internet before you spend any real money.

Amen Beeno,Paul never bemoaned his situation and always did what he said he would.

If some Johnny come lately post a reply to my classified I look to see if he is a member of the hamb and how long he has been a member,,this is not a 100% fool proof but if a guy has been here a long time and participates on the forum and not just the classifieds I feel a lot safer with my transactions. I got a reply for a guy with a different name to my hamb ad. Same deal, dormant pay pal etc. When I checked and he had one post I knew it was a scam. Anyone with only one post trying to buy or sell something is almost always a scam.

To get back to y'all, I've never seen a contraction that you used the full second word on the contraction - you're, I'm, he's. So I spell it ya'll unless it's plural and then it's all ya'll.
